College Football Bowl Preview: Compelling Matchups, Dead Ahead

College football is set to enter its final week, and that means the biggest bowl games are coming up. This weekend will see teams such as Auburn, Oklahoma and Georgia Tech in action. And the first week of 2012 will feature marquee matchups like Oregon vs. Wisconsin, and Oklahoma State against Stanford.

Talking about the bowl season with Morning Edition guest host Linda Wertheimer in an interview for Monday's show, NPR's Mike Pesca says he'll be paying particular attention to several upcoming games, including Penn State vs. Houston, and Georgia vs. Michigan State.

"Houston has an amazing offense," Pesca says. "They average over 60 yards a game. And they're scoring about 50 points a game. It is a juggernaut. Of course, these numbers were put up against such teams as the North Texas Mean Green."

And on Monday, Jan. 2, Houston's impressive offense will meet Penn State's stout defense.

In the 2011 season, Penn State's defense has allowed opponents "only 15 points a game ? one of the best defenses in the country," Pesca says. "For all the flaws of the bowl system, when you get two teams of such differing types playing against each other, it can be interesting."

Pesca says he'll also watch the Outback Bowl at 1 p.m. ET Monday, which pits Michigan State against Georgia, "just because I think the teams are good, and a little underrated."

Both of those teams finished the season with 10-3 records, having lost in their conference championship games ? Michigan State to Wisconsin, and Georgia to No. 1 LSU.

?

For a complete rundown of this season's bowl games, visit ESPN, which is airing many of the games, or if you prefer a reverse-chronological view, CBS can help. If you want a schedule that's easy to look at on your phone, the Flickr user "encouragement" has posted an image of the 2011-2012 bowl games.

The Rose Bowl will be played at 5 p.m. ET Monday, matching two offensive-minded teams in Oregon against Wisconsin.

"Oregon does it a lot of ways," Pesca says. "They're competent through the air. They have an excellent ground game. And Wisconsin, as Wisconsin usually does, really can pound the ball. And by 'ball,' I mean their running back, Montee Ball. He's a monster on the ground."

In terms of history, Pesca gives Wisconsin a slight edge ? Oregon hasn't won the Rose Bowl since 1917, he says.

But once the teams take the field, Pesca says, "perhaps the Oregon offense will have a little easier time with the Wisconsin defense than vice-versa."

Also Monday, the unofficial "Urban Meyer Bowl" kicks off at 1 p.m., when the coach's former team, Florida, meets his squad-in-waiting, Ohio State, in the Gator Bowl.

And when the Fiesta Bowl kicks off at 8:30 p.m. ET on the same day, fans will see one team that missed out on the BCS title game, in 11-1 Oklahoma State, and one player that several NFL teams are hoping they don't miss in the next draft: quarterback Andrew Luck, of 11-1 Stanford.

Oklahoma State has ridden its high-powered offense to a No. 3 ranking, Pesca says, while Stanford has relied on Luck, and a strong defense, to rise to No. 4 in the country.

"So, other than the national championship game, just in terms of rankings, this is the best possible matchup you could get," he says. "And it should be very intriguing."

And part of the draw will be to see how Luck performs in his final college game.

"He's not quite Peyton Manning ? I mean, he's only 21, 22 years old," Pesca says. "But he's a master, and he's a craftsman out there on the field. I will definitely be tuning in."

The much-maligned BCS system uses several criteria to determine the top six teams ? and which two schools should compete for the BCS title. Part of its formula is based on the USA Today Coaches' Poll.

If you have time before watching your next game, and you're curious about how coaches rated their own school ? and, more interestingly, those from rival conferences ? you can check out a sortable grid of the coaches' final ballots over at USA Today.

Katy Perry, Russell Brand Breakup Rumors Swirl Online

Both celebs were photographed without their wedding bands this week.
By Kara Warner

Katy Perry and Russell Brand have both been spotted in public sans wedding bands recently, and while there has been no official word regarding a separation of any sort, nothing sets the Internet rumor mill spinning like a high-profile married couple stepping out with naked ring fingers.

Perry was first spotted without her ring around Christmas, but she was splashing around in the ocean and could have chosen not to wear the ring for fear of losing it, not to make a statement about her relationship status.

A wedding-ring-free Brand was snapped by photographers walking around London on Thursday (December 29), further fueling rumors of marital trouble that have been swirling, which both Brand and Perry addressed recently.

"There are always rumors, aren't there? In the end, you have to just not engage with Internet technology, which is difficult because a lot of the nude women websites I quite enjoy," Brand joked to Ellen DeGeneres about breakup rumors during his visit to her talk show. "I've treated the whole Internet now like it's a wicked little liar. Yeah. I am really happily married," he added. "I'm married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge."

Perry took to Twitter in November to brush off earlier rumblings. "First I'm pregnant & then I'm divorced. What am I 'All My Children'?! #ericakane #pshhh #ifihadadollarforeverytime ...," she tweeted. The pop princess and cheeky British comedian have been married since October 2010.

Best Movie Deaths Of 2011

From 'Harry Potter' to 'Drive,' MTV News mourns — and praises — the year's best fictional deaths.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2"
Photo: Warner Bros

It is traditional at the end of the year to look back on those we have lost in Hollywood. Usually this means a poignant montage of actors, actresses and crew members during the Academy Awards, but it should also be noted that plenty of fictional passings occurred in 2011 as well.

They may have been memorable, sad, thrilling or even funny, but each movie death meant something, and if we were to look back on the characters that passed away this year, these are the five that would get the biggest applause.

It should noted that this article contains nothing but spoilers.

Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon in "X-Men: First Class")
All it took was a coin through the skull to remind us why Kevin Bacon should be in more movies. His character, Sebastian Shaw, lived large and in style, choosing a submarine as his method of world travel and double-breasted suits as his villainous costume. When Magneto finally met up with him to serve up some revenge extra cold, Shaw ate it in one of the most memorable scenes of 2011.

Fred Weasley (James Phelps in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2")
Many characters didn't live to see the end of the Battle of Hogwarts, but none hurt as much as the demise of one-half of the ginger-haired duo. George may have lost an ear in Part 1, but he lost a twin brother during the series finale, and we were there with him. At the very least, we can all remember the fun times we had together and rest assured that there is still one genetically identical person walking Diagon Alley.

Beth Emhoff (Gwyneth Paltrow in "Contagion")
The look of terror on Paltrow's face from the trailer may rank among some of the year's most horrifying movie images. Beth Emhoff's death early in the film starts the chain reaction that sets the film's wheels in motion, but none of the millions of deaths caused by the virus are shown with as much intimacy. She may have been patient zero, but she'll always be #1 in our hearts.

Shannon (Bryan Cranston in "Drive")
Bryan Cranston's Shannon didn't have much time to accept his fate, and neither did we. Before we knew it, Bernie Rose (played by Albert Brooks) had declared it "over." Even the toughest of moviegoers had to flinch at the sight of the razor blade cutting through the neighborly mechanic's arm. Shannon added both comic relief and charm to a movie that benefitted so greatly because of it.

Planet Earth in "The Tree of Life" and "Melancholia"
The character we're all closest with bit the dust not once but twice this year at the movies. It's never an easy thing, watching the planet you've grown up on destroyed — just ask Princess Leia. But never has the destruction of our home world been shown with as much stunning cinematography as it was in mouth of these art house hits.

Letting Them Down Gently

I've only GMed a few group RP's, and to be honest, they didn't succeed very well. I'm working on a new RP, which I'm going to be GMing, and foreseeing a future problem I wanted your input on it.

Say a character just God-Modded, taking the story completely of tangent, making themselves the master of the story and crushing all other character beneath their six inch stiletto heels. How do you politely, without inciting a riot, let them know that they need to fix this? And that if they don't fix it, you have to remove them from the RP?

Or even before that, if someone submits a Mary Sue character sheet, or something else along those lines, how do you tell them to change it? And even after they changed it, if it's still not right for your RP, how do you tell them that that character isn't acceptable?

Is it better to let them down gently or to just flat out tell them the truth, in a more blunt fashion? If you want to let them down gently, how do you go about doing so?

Personally I'd rather let them down gently, but I'm a pushover. Working up the courage to tell them It isn't good enough is hard enough as it is, I tend to be too gentle about it. I usually tell them what specifically isn't okay in as sweet a way as I can manage, and politely ask them to fix it. But how do you think it's best to go about this? What have you seen go over succesfully, and what have you seen fail miserably?

"You can beat me, you can kick me, you can spread my blood all over the pretty white floor. But you can never break what isn't yours. I belong to my Lord."

93% Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

All Critics (172) | Top Critics (33) | Fresh (160) | Rotten (12)

As usual with the series, the movie combines a plot line a toddler could understand with gadgets that would baffle an engineering Ph.D.

I'm thinking it, so I might as well say it: Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is no Fast Five.

...it's pretty much state-of-the-art.

[Bird's] fresh touch gives breathless energy, tremendous excitement and, above all, humor to what could have been a wearying genre exercise.

Powered by Cruise's moxie, Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol proves that in a Hollywood action-ride culture drenched in fake adrenaline, it's cathartic to encounter the real thing.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is top-notch popcorn entertainment, chock-full of dazzling stunts and heroic moments, played out at a near-hysterical pitch.

Something goes wrong and the entire Kremlin blows up. 'The wattage of my smile has overpowered the antiquated Russian electrical grid,' explained Tom.

The cinematography is rewarding enough for a travelogue. The good guy vs. the world with a hateful bad guy is involving. This is another film where you should just leave your brain at home, relax, and enjoy it.

Welcome to the post-Pixar action movie.

Best line of 2011 delivered by Jeremy Renner: "That's it. Next time I get to seduce the rich guy." Why is MI4 so terrific? I screamed out in the theater: "The pants are gonna rip!"

o Bird energa daneisthke kai merikes selides apo to skhnothetiko biblio toy Nolan, me pio ofthalmofanh kai dhlwmenh, th pisth pws to IMAX, kai oxi to S3D, mporei na epanaferei ayth thn apostomwtikh kallitexnikh flasia

It's actually pretty entertaining... but a certain genericness is creeping in.

A mature Tom Cruise is in top form here, displaying a relatively-sophisticated savoir faire in lieu of the easy boyish charm that's served him so well in the past.

It's a great mix that feeds an action junkie's need for death defying stunts but reminds us how dangerous it all really is so that we remain engaged in the tension of the scene.

Exhilarating, nerve-wracking, vertigo-inducing, action-packed popcorn picture, filled with spectacular feats of derring-do.

This is some Star Trek level techno-nonsense, but the locations, stunts, and ambient batsh*ttedness of the entire endeavor provide ample distraction.

Could be the poster boy for disposable films.

By turns eye-watering, knee trembling, heart-pounding and rib-tickling, this gravity-defying blockbuster is what popcorn was invented for. Chomp away!

...a perfectly watchable (yet undeniably overlong) entry in an almost remarkably consistent series...

This franchise has never dazzled with brilliance but it certainly baffles with something else. Mostly it's video game-style violence... occasionally pausing for necessary exposition that at home would be times to rest your thumbs.

Perhaps we shouldn't expect too much in the way of character in this kind of thing - but action always seems more fun when it's done by real people.

What the script lacks in plausibility - almost everything - it compensates with all-guns-blazing fun.

M:I4 proves to be a sugar rush of pure, unadulterated entertainment. Even with a running time of two-plus hours, there's not an ounce of fat.

ay what you will about his personal life: Tom Cruise is a genuine movie star. He's extremely talented and his timing is impeccable. Just watch him in his latest outing as special agent Ethan Hunt in 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.'

A truly awesome slice of action cinema.

Netflix, Gap lag in customer satisfaction online (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Netflix Inc and Gap Inc were among the worst performers in customer satisfaction among the largest online retailers this holiday season, according to a survey released on Wednesday.

Overstock.com Inc came last out of the 40 largest online retailers, with a rating of 72 out of 100, down 4 points from last year, the survey by ForSee found.

Gap.com, Gap's main website, was second last with 73 points, down 5 from a year ago. Other laggards included buy.com and websites run by Sony and Toys R Us, ForSee said.

Customer satisfaction is important for retailers because it can lead to higher sales, more loyalty and increased word-of-mouth recommendations, ForSee said.

Netflix saw the biggest decline in customer satisfaction in ForSee's most-recent survey after the company tried to raise prices and split its DVD and video-streaming services. The plan was scrapped after customers defected.

"Netflix totally misread its customer base and is paying the price, damaging its brand among both consumers and investors," said Larry Freed, chief executive officer of ForSee.

Netflix shares lost more than half their value this year, with most of the damage coming after the company unveiled its intention to split its services.

Netflix had come close to customer-satisfaction leader Amazon.com in previous ForSee surveys. But in the latest poll, Netflix dropped 7 points to 79, the largest decline of any retailer in the survey.

Amazon climbed 2 points to 88 to lead ForSee's survey for the 14th consecutive time. ForSee runs the poll about every six months.

The biggest gainer was TigerDirect.com, a tech gadget and parts website owned by Systemax Inc, which climbed 6 points to 79.

Another big gainer was JCP.com, J.C. Penney's website, which rose 5 points to 83. That put the retailer in a tie for third place with QVC.com, Apple's online store and VistaPrint.com.

Fatal Conn. fire reminds homeowners of ash dangers (AP)

HARTFORD, Conn. ? Fireplace ashes can be deceiving. Just ask anyone involved in the nearly 11,600 residential building fires in the U.S. each year that federal safety officials say are caused by hot embers or ashes.

It appears that Michael Borcina was among those duped. Fire officials in Stamford, Conn., say a bag of fireplace ashes Borcina left near the back of the home where he was staying caused a fire early Christmas morning that killed his friend's three children and their two grandparents. Borcina and the mother, Madonna Badger, escaped the blaze after failed attempts to rescue the little girls.

The fire has led to renewed safety warnings by federal and local authorities.

"What often happens, and it's a pretty common scenario that we see, is that although the fire may look out, the embers in the ashes may remain hot enough to start a fire for up to 24 hours after the fire is thought to be out," said Tom Olshanski, a spokesman for the U.S. Fire Administration.

Olshanski and local fire officials in Stamford and other communities urged homeowners this week to put fireplace ashes in a metal container and place it well away from the house. If you leave hot ashes in the fireplace, make sure there's a metal screen or glass partition in place, they said. And, of course, make sure you have working smoke detectors, they advised.

University of Vermont men's basketball coach John Becker and his family could have suffered a tragedy similar to the one in Stamford on Tuesday. A construction worker who just happened to be passing by the Beckers' home noticed it was on fire and woke the family up by knocking on the door around 6:30 a.m.

Burlington's fire marshal, Terry Francis, said the fire was caused by hot fireplace ashes in a paper bag that was placed on the back porch of the home the night before. Becker, his wife and their daughter escaped.

"We got out of there in the nick of time," Becker told the Burlington Free Press. "Kenny Roberts was the construction worker who saved us. I can't thank him enough, and I can't thank the Burlington Fire Department enough."

The Fire Safety Administration says there about 374,900 residential building fires in the U.S. every year. Those fires kill more than 2,600 people and injure another 13,000. Cooking is the leading cause, starting 44 percent of the fires.

About 192,700 of yearly residential fires spread beyond the source, and 6 percent of those fires are caused by hot embers or ashes, the Fire Safety Administration says.

And 15 percent of multiple-fatality fires are caused by unintentional or careless actions, the agency says. There are about 250 multiple-fatality fires in the U.S. each year, resulting in an estimated 825 deaths and 200 injuries.

No fatality statistics solely for fires caused by ashes were available.

In Stamford, fire officials say they believe Borcina, a 52-year-old construction company owner, left a bag of hot fireplace ashes near the back of the house between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. The fire was reported just after 4:40 a.m.

Borcina, who left the hospital Wednesday, has declined to comment.

Badger's three daughters, 10-year-old Lily and 7-year-old twins Grace and Sarah, and her parents, Lomer and Pauline Johnson died amid frantic rescue attempts by Borcina, Badger and local firefighters. Borcina and Badger were treated at a local hospital and released.

The Connecticut medical examiner's office said Wednesday that the victims died of smoke inhalation, and Lomer Johnson also suffered a blunt head and neck injury, possibly from a fall or being hit by an object.

One of the girls, found dead just inside a window, had been placed on a pile of books, apparently so Johnson could reach in and grab her after he jumped out. Instead, authorities say, he fell through the roof.

Rowan University students prepare to work as Engineers Without Borders

Ten Rowan University students will begin their new year by participating in Engineers Without Borders projects in El Salvador and The Gambia.

Two juniors ? Sarah Gettings of Runnemede and Gemma Peebles of East Windsor ? will play integral roles in these programs. Gettings is the project lead for El Salvador, and Peebles is the EWB?s web master and clinic team lead for The Gambia.

Gettings said the Rowan EWB chapter has been working with the community of La Ceiba, El Salvador since 2007.

?The river and wells in the community are all contaminated with unhealthy levels of coliform,? said Gettings. ?This contamination causes high incidence of diarrhea and parasites among community members, resulting in the death of many children. Three assessment trips were made by the chapter from 2007 to 2010, during which many different solutions were examined and talked about with the community. The final solution, which was affordable for both the chapter and the community, sustainable and practical overall, was to install biosand filters in each of the 150 homes of La Ceiba.?

Gettings said, since this decision was reached, the Rowan chapter of EWB has taken two trips to the area ? in January and June 2011. Ten biosand filters were constructed and installed on each trip and the filter recipients were taught how to use and maintain their filters and encouraged to participate in the construction process. On the June trip, monitoring activities like water quality testing and health and filter surveys of the filter recipients were also completed.

?So far, the filters have been successful in removing contamination from the water,? said Gettings. ?A team of Rowan students and a professional mentor will be traveling this January to install 15 more filters and continue to monitor filters that have already been installed.?

As the project lead, Gettings said a lot of her responsibilities were in preparing for the trip.

?I was making sure all of the reports required by EWB were completed, picking the travel team, getting everyone?s paperwork together, making sure the community knew we were coming, making sure supplies were ordered, getting plane tickets and travel insurance, packing our cases with water quality testing supplies and anything else we would need, making our schedule, assigning responsibilities to each team member and organizing and holding meetings with the travel team,? said Gettings. ?I had a lot of help from one of the travel team members, Kelly Barb, who is also on the clinic team with me.?

Gettings said while the team is in El Salvador, she will make sure they stay on schedule with the work that needs to be done each day and adjust the schedule when needed.

?I will hold meetings each night where the team will get together and discuss what was accomplished that day and goals for the next day, and I will help resolve any issues that arise,? she said. ?Along with that, I will be doing manual labor with the rest of my team and some community members, sieving and washing sand and gravel for the filters. I will lead a small group of three or four team members when we are ready to install the filters, and I will also be doing some water quality testing for monitoring.?

Peebles said the original reason the Rowan EWB team went to The Gambia was to repair a flooding road.

?Another organization actually completed that project, so we started looking at the pumps in the villages,? said Peebles. ?Our project at that point was to find sustainable ways to help the villagers access clean drinking water. Another project was added to that when the issue of deforestation came up ? peanut-shell briquettes which could be added to fires as a supplement for wood during cooking. We?ll be collecting data from the villages on our main project ? water pump repair and maintenance ? as well as monitoring our original project ? the Kudang-Kuntaur Road. We also hope to test our peanut shell briquettes.?

Part of Peebles? leadership role was to get The Gambia trip approved, with which she had obvious success.

?From this point on, it will be to finalize trip details and make sure we get the proper data out of this trip,? said Peebles. ?When we?re actually in-country, I will be collecting data on our peanut shell project. As web master, I update the website and as clinic lead, I make sure all the paperwork gets done on time and handed in. Everyday duties include editing reports, reading sections from other team members for accuracy and pounding out trip details. I prepared by reading documents from the project leads in past years to find out exactly what had been tried already or what still needed to be done.?

Peebles, who will be in The Gambia with her team from Jan. 2 to 13, said she expects ?a thorough and complete end-product from all aspects of the projects.? Though she said the projects are very time-consuming and sometimes difficult as far as communication is concerned, she would like to continue to work on the project in years to come. Peebles? ultimate goal is to be a civil engineer in the United States Air Force.

?I?m in the ROTC program and will commission after my senior year,? said Peebles. ?The Air Force does many humanitarian missions around the world and, as a civil engineer, I could be a part of that. Through Engineers Without Borders, I can get some experience with travel and the cultures of other countries. I will also be more aware of the problems they have around the world and be better prepared to combat them.?

Peebles said she?s both nervous and excited about the project. She has never been out of the country before, let alone planned a trip to Africa. But she thinks it will be a great ?eye-opening experience.?

Gettings, who already traveled to El Salvador once last June, said she now knows what to expect on her trip, so she?s mostly excited.

?It is very different than America,? she said. ?Since it was my first time out of the country, I think the biggest shock to me was that I couldn?t understand anything. I knew no one would be speaking English, but I had never experienced anything like that before. It was weird to not be able to communicate at all with anyone except the small group of people that I went with. It was very obvious just from our three hour drive from the airport to La Ceiba that it was a poor area. It was even more obvious once we were in La Ceiba. And it made me realize, even more than I already knew, all of the things we take for granted.?

Gettings said she expects the project will continue its success and looks forward to seeing more and more community involvement so that, eventually, the people of La Ceiba will be able to make the biosand filters without the team?s help.

?These projects are important because they are changing people?s lives,? she said. ?It?s hard, probably impossible, to imagine what it?s like to live in a place where you know drinking the water will probably make you sick, probably make your children sick. They didn?t do anything to deserve that. If I have the ability to help, why would I not??

Though she?s not yet sure what her ultimate career goal would be, Gettings said she knows she wants to continue to work with EWB.

?You learn a lot when you work on these projects, not just about the methods of coming up with solutions and technical design, but about what to do when things don?t go as planned, about thinking and problem solving in the field, and about people, culture and cultural differences,? she said. ?These things all help make me a more well-rounded engineering student, which is helpful no matter what field I go into. And I would encourage others to get involved because it?s a good opportunity to help people and to learn a lot. The more people that are involved and helping, the more people we can help.?

Oil hovers above $101 amid rising Iran tensions (AP)

SINGAPORE ? Oil prices hovered above $101 a barrel amid investor concern that rising Middle East tensions could disrupt crude supplies.

Benchmark crude for February delivery rose 6 cents to $101.40 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.66 to settle at $101.34 in New York on Tuesday.

In London, Brent crude was down 12 cents to $109.15 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Iran's official news agency IRNA reported Tuesday that Vice President Mohamed Reza Rahimi said his country will close the Strait of Hormuz, cutting off oil exports, if Western nations impose sanctions on Iran's oil shipments.

The U.S., the U.K. and other nations are mulling more sanctions against Iran, the world's fourth-largest oil producer, over concern about its nuclear power program.

The Strait of Hormuz, the choke point of the Persian Gulf, is one of the world's busiest routes for crude shipments with about a sixth of the world's oil production passing through.

If tankers could not use the strait, they would have to take longer, more expensive routes to their destinations, which would likely boost prices.

"We doubt political posturing will turn into action, but oil remains above $100 regardless," energy consultant and trader The Schork Group said in a report.

Schork estimates crude would jump to above $140 if Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz.

Signs the U.S. economy is improving also helped bolster crude. The New York-based Conference Board said its Consumer Confidence Index jumped almost 10 points from November, to 64.5, the highest since April.

The National Retail Federation said it expects a 3.8 percent increase in Christmas holiday sales, up from its forecast of 2.8 percent in September.

In other Nymex trading, heating oil rose 0.2 cent to $2.92 per gallon and gasoline futures slid 0.3 cents at $2.68 per gallon. Natural gas was down 2.1 cents to $3.09 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Nigerian Muslims bomb church for Christmas

Nigerians fear more church attacks after 39 killed Dec 26, 5:02 AM (ET)

By LEKAN OYEKANMI and JON GAMBRELL

MADALLA, Nigeria (AP) - At a Nigerian Catholic church where a terror attack killed 35 people on Christmas, women tried to clean the sanctuary ahead of Mass on Monday while one man wept uncontrollably amid the debris.

Outside St. Theresa Catholic Church, crowds gathered among the burned-out cars in the dirt parking lot, angry over the attack claimed by a radical Muslim sect and fearful that the group will target more churches.

Rev. Father Christopher Jataudarde told The Associated Press that Sunday's blast happened as church officials gave parishioners white powder as part of a tradition celebrating the birth of Christ.

Some already had left the church at the time of the bombing, causing the massive casualties. In the chaos after the bombing, Jataudarde said one mortally wounded man, cradling his shredded stomach, begged him for religious atonement.

"Father, pray for me, I will not survive," the man said, according to the priest.

At least 52 people were wounded in the attack, said Slaku Luguard, a coordinator with Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency. Victims filled the cement floors of a nearby government hospital, some crying in pools of their own blood.

On Christmas, attacks by the radical Muslim sect left 39 dead across Africa's most populous nation. A bomb also exploded amid gunfire in the central Nigeria city of Jos and a suicide car bomber attacked the military in the nation's northeast.

An all Apple family celebrates second anniversary of living completely Microsoft-free

Dec 27, 2011 - 05:30 PM EST ? AAPL: 406.53 (+3.20, +0.79%) | NASDAQ: 2625.20 (+6.56, +0.25%)

?Back in April, I proudly declared my second anniversary of living completely Microsoft-free,? Ed Brill blogs for his eponymous site. ?Beyond Microsoft-free, though, the point of that blog entry was how much Apple technology had entered my life in the last few years.?

[Ed Brill is Director, Messaging and Collaboration, IBM Lotus software. - MacDailyNews Ed.]

?Earlier this month, IBM started a conversion of our corporate mobile device program, in line with what had been disclosed externally a few months ago,? Brill writes. ?For the first time, I had the opportunity to have an iPhone and have IBM manage the billing. It meant buying my own phone, but the opportunity to move not just in a Microsoft-free direction, but an all-Apple direction, was too good to pass up.?

?The switch was so simple, I almost didn?t realize it had happened,? Brill explains. ?When I first powered up the iPhone on Friday afternoon, and clicked through the setup options, an error suddenly popped up on my old [BlackBerry] phone, that the SIM was no longer provisioned. A few minutes later, I logged onto a Lotus Mobile Connect gateway on ibm.com, and Notes Traveler and LMC were being provisioned on the device. The app store app already knew what apps I had on my iPad, so installing IBM Sametime and IBM Connections were both single-tap actions. My contacts synced from Notes through Traveler. In short, save some recent images shot with the camera on my old phone, I didn?t have to do anything to transition from one device to another, and I?m up and running on the 8th piece of Apple gear in production use in my household. It.Just.Works.?

NBA's return draws big TV ratings on Christmas

(AP) ? NBA fans seem more excited about basketball's return than bitter about the lockout based on television ratings for the league's delayed openers.

The five Christmas games Sunday averaged 6.2 million viewers based on fast national ratings, up from 6 million last year.

The Bulls-Lakers matchup was the third most-watched regular-season game ever on ABC, behind only last year's highly anticipated Heat-Lakers showdown and another meeting between Miami and LA in 2004.

Chris Paul's Clippers debut in the nightcap against the Warriors earned a 2.2 rating, up 69 percent over last year's Portland-Golden State telecast in the same slot.

It was ESPN's highest-rated Christmas prime-time game. The day's first contest, Celtics-Knicks on TNT, was the most viewed Christmas game ever on cable. The 4.0 rating was up 48 percent from last year's Bulls-Knicks game on ESPN.

The first night game on ESPN ? Magic-Thunder ? drew a 1.8, up 29 percent from last year's Denver-Oklahoma City matchup. The afternoon's finals rematch on ABC, the Heat's rout of the Mavericks, earned a 4.9, up 7 percent from Boston-Orlando last year.

Ratings represent the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned to a program.

Pistons get under way with new owner, new coach, new attitude

Auburn Hills ? Absurdity. Buffoonery. Chicanery.

If there were ABCs to last year's version of the Pistons, those would be among the key words.

Everything that could've gone wrong did. A 30-52 season included 10 losing streaks of at least three games, and players organized a mutiny against coach John Kuester. The season turned from disappointing to embarrassing.

The team was for sale, with an owner who essentially halted any significant transactions, and was led by a coach who in hindsight was ill-prepared to lead a disparate group of players.

Franchise mainstay Richard Hamilton was going through what seemed to be a 12-step divorce process that bordered on something you'd see on "The Young and the Restless" instead of on a team with a championship tradition. It was encapsulated by the player boycott in February, when half the team didn't bother to show up for shoot-around in Philadelphia.

If those were the Pistons' darkest days, the 2011-12 season marks the dawn of a new era. Owner Tom Gores, coach Lawrence Frank and first-round draft pick Brandon Knight hope to be the first pieces of the Pistons' third glorious era ? and they're starting from ground zero.

Gores is bringing an energy the team has lacked, and has been quick to put his stamp on the franchise by putting his money where his mouth is, devoting millions into revitalizing The Palace's facilities and hiring Dennis Mannion to run the entertainment endeavors.

Although Gores is a novice NBA executive, Pistons president Joe Dumars said Gores is engaged and has been nothing but helpful in the early stages of their relationship.

"We're going to lean on him," Gores said of Dumars at the owner's introductory news conference in June. "He knows basketball, and we're going to push (him) and push hard."

As an example that Gores will be much more than an absentee owner, Hamilton's contract was bought out, removing a black cloud of uncertainty.

Frank has taken the reins from Kuester and is in the long process of de-programming the bad habits the team developed in recent years, vowing to return the Pistons to their hard-working roots. He's spoken openly about "getting the fans back" and turning The Palace into the house of horrors for opponents it was once known as during the Pistons' successful run that ended a few seasons ago.

"We have to earn it; it's on us to bring the fans back," Frank said. "We have to give them a reason. We have to put forth a maximum effort to do that.

"When Tom hired me, he said it's not enough to win a championship. You have to be impactful, to impact the lives of people in and around the city."

When the lockout was over, Frank spent time with each individual player, letting them know the slate was wiped clean from last season's drama.

"He holds people accountable," guard Rodney Stuckey said of Frank. "He tells it like it is. He teaches every single one of us. It's very constructive."

Dumars himself seems to be rejuvenated, finally getting the support he's wanted but never spoke publicly about over the past few seasons.

Gores and his people like Dumars because he's not resting on his laurels as a player or executive, even though he's arguably the most accomplished local sports figure of the past 25 years. Now he has the task of rebuilding a team that has been hit by ownership neglect. He has a plan, and now he can actually go about implementing it.

Bringing back free agents Stuckey and Tayshaun Prince surprised most fans. It was expected the Pistons would distance themselves from last season's issues. But with those signings, Dumars demonstrated he believes the stench of losing can unfairly affect a player's worth and public perception.

"'Move on' doesn't mean you throw the baby out with the bath water," said Dumars after Prince's signing was announced. "You can't just get rid of everybody."

A crucial step was hiring Frank, an experienced coach with a self-deprecating personality but also a chip on his shoulder. He wants results but he's ready to be patient with the process, too.

"You don't want this to be a circus; you can't be changing every day," Frank said.

And finally, Knight represents what the fans will hold onto as the biggest sign of hope ? someone who can step right in and produce.

Knight arrived from Kentucky as a big-game player, and after his surprising fall from the top of the lottery, he surely has a chip on his shoulder similar to Frank's.

"No matter what sport you're playing, you always want to win," Knight said. "You have to make sure that you're lifting the team up, picking guys up, being a great teammate."

The bottom line is getting to the playoffs, which this team plans on doing after a two-year sabbatical. Frank said it starts with a superior defensive effort.

"What history shows is if you're a high-level defensive team, it gives you the best chance to play in the postseason," he said. "That's our goal."

Then possibly, the ABCs that will become synonymous with Pistons basketball will be more flattering.

Ga. towns aims to fuel trucks with cooking oil mix

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta suburb of Smyrna plans to fuel some of its city trucks with a mix that includes biodiesel, which is repurposed cooking oil the city plans to collect from dozens of restaurants that fry food.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://bit.ly/sZWyAM) that Smyrna joins at least two other Georgia cities - Roswell and Tybee Island - in using Department of Energy federal stimulus funds to start and run biodiesel programs for their fleets.

Ann Kirk, executive director of Keep Smyrna Beautiful, said her city's program will begin in January. It was modeled on a program in Hoover, Ala.

Kirk said it will be phased in as supplemental fuel for the city's fleet, with the idea that eventually some of the city's trucks will run entirely on the repurposed cooking oil.

How To Use Anyone?s Face As A Facebook Chat Emoticon

Josh Constine is a technology journalist who specializes in deep analysis of social products. He is currently a writer for TechCrunch. Emoticons no longer have to be anonymous smiley faces representing simple emotions. Facebook Chat now lets you use the profile picture of any user, official Page, or event on the service as an emoticon. That means you can make one out of your best friend, Chuck Norris, Justin Bieber, Barack Obama or anyone else. This opens up a whole new way to express complex emotions. Here?s how to do it:

  1. Go to any profile, official Page, or event that you want to use as an emoticon.
  2. Look at the URL. Find the username?or profile ID at the end of the URL such as ?VinDiesel? from http://www.facebook.com/VinDiesel, ?JoshConstine?, ?cocacola?, or ?45197362282?
  3. Place that name or number in double brackets like [[VinDiesel]]
  4. Enter that into a Facebook Chat or Message field. When you send it, the bracketed number or letters will appear as that person, Page, or event?s current profile picture.

You can send these custom emoticons from the web or mobile, but they?ll only display as photos on the web. When viewed through a Facebook app or mobile site they?appear as their bracketed string. Similarly, you can?t use them in status updates, wall posts, or comments yet. They appear pretty small, but you can hover over the photos to view the username it belongs too. Community Pages, those that aren?t owned by anyone and that display a Wikipedia entry, can?t be used.

Not so excited about other people using you as an emoticon? Tough luck. Profile pictures and usernames are public, so this doesn?t technically violate privacy and there?s no way to opt out of having your face used.

For a long time, Facebook only had one custom smiley. The code :putnam: would show the face of Facebook engineer Chris Putnam. Now you can replace verbs, nouns, and adjectives with whoever represents them best. As our writer John Biggs described yesterday, you can use?4Chan Ragefaces (here are the codes), and Reddit user Sky_Prodigy spawned a thread full of codes for faces and alphabets.

The emoticon has evolved.

Here?s a few ideas for people and Pages you could use as emoticons. Just copy the bracketed text at the end. Have ideas for more? Leave them in the comments and I?ll add the best ones to our list:

Facebook is the world?s largest social network, with over 500 million users. Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in February 2004, initially as an exclusive network for Harvard students. It was a huge hit: in 2 weeks, half of the schools in the Boston area began demanding a Facebook network. Zuckerberg immediately recruited his friends Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes to help build Facebook, and within four months, Facebook added 30 more college networks. Canada?s First High-Ranking Delegation Visits Kurdistan

The visiting Canadian officials Encouraged to Strengthen Political and Economic Relations With Kurdistan Region

Canada?s new Ambassador to Iraq and Jordan, ?Mark Gwozdecky, marked the first Canadian official to visit the Kurdistan Region of Iraq(KRG) ?late last week where ?he was received by ?the Kurdistan Region?s leadership, including ?Kurdistan President, Masoud Barzani, according to a press release published on KRG website.

The Canadian Ambassador said that many of his colleagues have spoken ?very highly of the progress and development in Kurdistan, and ?added that he was glad to be able to witness these developments firsthand. ? ?The KRG statement mentioned. ??I am very happy to hear you are getting on with the business of developing your region notwithstanding the problems around you, moving ahead to make life better for your people. That?s what the people want and that?s what they deserve after all those years of instability and sometimes misery.? ?The Canadian official said.

The Canadian Government warns ?Canadians against all travel?to Iraq, ?except for the areas administered by the Kurdistan Regional Government (the provinces of Dahuk, Erbil, and Sulaymaniyah). Except for those in the Kurdistan region, Canadians currently in Iraq should leave,? ?according to the Canadian Foreign Affairs Ministry website?s ?Warning and Recommendations.??

The Canadian high-ranking officials visit to Kurdistan Region?aimed to? discuss ?potential areas of cooperation in both the public and private sectors.? ?Kurdish statement said. The Canadian Ambassador also spoke of the large Kurdish communities that reside in Canada, many of whom fled the hardships that they had to endure under the previous regime. He added that these communities will play an important role in helping establish stronger relations between Canada and the Kurdistan Region.

The Kurdistan Region President on behalf?of the Kurdish people conveyed thanks via the Ambassador for ?Canada?s support and assistance to the Kurdish people? ?during the now defunct ?regime of Iraq, and hoped that Kurdistan and Canada can develop relations that ?based on mutual understanding and interests.?

There are some Canadian companies that are already active in the Kurdistan Region, mainly in the oil and gas sector. However, Canada has kept its distance from Iraq and Kurdistan Region since the 2003 US-led?invasion?of Iraq which toppled the former Iraqi dictator. ?In March 2004 post-war Iraq, when the ?former Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister?had a plan to discuss Canadian Policy with Canadian-ethnic communities, Kurdish community?Representative?of Vancouver,?Aram Azez,?suggested?establishing Canada-Kurdistan relation committees that would?strengthen bilateral relations, based on common interests and values in political,?economic and cultural ties between Canada and Kurdistan Region.??However, then Liberal?Government?of Canada?s foreign minister didn?t show ?interest in?establishing relationships with the Kurdish region or Iraq at all.

Kurdistan Minister of Foreign Relations,?Falah Mustafa, ?also ?encouraged the ?Canadian ?Ambassador ?and the?delegation?accompanied him?to consider establishing a representative office in Kurdistan to join the other 23 diplomatic and foreign representations already present in Kurdistan. The?Canada?delegation was included the ?Ambassador?Deputy Head of Mission Mr Yves Duval, and the Embassy?s senior Trade Commissioner Mr John Ormond, according to KRG statement.
