Desktop Alert Announces Department of Navy/Marines Mass Notification System Type Accreditation Initiative

The U.S. Department of Navy/Marines formally requests Desktop Alert to participate in Mass Notification Study and Certification Process. Desktop Alert forwards patent pending ?one minute or less notification? mass notification platform technology for review.

Chatham, New Jersey (PRWEB) January 28, 2013

Desktop Alert Inc., the nation?s leading and de-facto provider of ?less than one minute? IP-Based mass notification systems to Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Northern Command, NORAD, the U.S. Army worldwide, the U.S. National Guard and U.S. Air National Guard today announced the U.S. Department of Navy/Marines has formally invited the company to participate in furthering U.S. Navy and Marine enterprise-level mass notification initiatives and capabilities.

Additionally, the company is now competing for the upcoming 2013 U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force enterprise-level (worldwide) mass notification award initiatives. Desktop Alert is the de-facto mass notification system selected by the United States Military Academy at West Point, Fort Hood, Fort Gordon, U.S. Air Force Space Command, Air Force Global Strike Command Base Malmstrom, U.S. Air Force Academy, Maxwell Air Force Base, Buckley Air Force Base, the National Guard (Air and Army) nationwide and many more key Department of Defense locations. The privately owned company is perched for substantial growth within the Department of Defense in 2013.

?We are very excited by the Navy invitation to participate in government assistance programs designed to enhance crucial existing mass notification systems and initiatives. The Navy has made it abundantly clear it wishes to ?reduce costs? and more so, eliminate stovepipe information sharing between DoD agencies often externally imposed by proprietary vendor systems with that of newly adopted platforms such as the common alerting protocol (CAP). Ultimately, we believe Desktop Alert will provide the government with significantly reduced cost propositions while simultaneously expanding system capability across existing computational infrastructures using less hardware, less bandwidth and much more alerting horsepower. Get more, pay less. It is a win-win proposition for the warfighter, the government and the taxpayer,? said Howard Ryan, Founder Desktop Alert Inc.

During an emergency, events change rapidly. Situational awareness is crucial to help mitigate and diffuse an unfolding crisis. An alert that is received after several minutes (and possibly without knowledge of an updated communication) could become dangerous. A key factor for recent technological advancements in the alerting industry has been the participation through interoperability across IP-Based computer networks. Desktop Alert is a sponsor-level member at OASIS.

OASIS (Advancing Open Standards For The Information Society) has recently been adopted by the U.S. Department of Defense as well as numerous Government agencies worldwide as a mandatory interoperability standard. In order for industry vendors to be considered for mass notification contracts to Government, they must now provide information sharing via the ratified OASIS protocol: Common Alerting Protocol.

?Historically, it is this lack of interoperability between agencies and vendors that has prevented critical messages from being delivered and consumed in a timely manner during emergencies. Communicating to key stakeholders in critical situations, whether they are corporate threats or life threatening crises, requires speed and proper execution. Make sure you have evaluated the newest technological developments in the alert industry to guarantee that your emergency communications get out to the intended audience in a timely manner and, believe it, the latest standard is in a minute or less. To that end, the Navy and Marines have taken a very keen interest in bolstering their emergency response capabilities,? added Ryan.

Promote Your Small Business To Online - Work On the Internet

If you own a small business, advertising costs via print media can be expensive. Instead of dishing out money for ads that only get some notice, come up with a plan that is heavy on internet marketing. I've outlined four methods that can work for you.
If you run a small business, advertisingcosts must be figured in as part of your overall expenses. If you have received quotes for phone directory ads, business association block ads, and mostly any other print media, these costs are quite high. So, what if your budget is small, perhaps negligible? Will you be left outside of the advertising arena or are there other avenues to help you get the word out? The answer in one word is: yes. Let???s explore ways you can ???get the word out??? through online means???yes, via the internet!

The rise of the internet has spawned an entire industry with it. You may remember in the late 1990s stories of dot.com companies who made a fortune and then went bust. The ???irrational exuberance??? of that era has, thankfully, passed by and in its place is a much more rational, but very lively market.
Today???s biggest players online are search engine providers led by Google, Yahoo!, and MSN. Between them, these three search engines dominate the market. Mostly everyone today searches the internet for products sold by small businesses to large corporations and these are the people you want to target. Indeed, while Christmas season sales typically increase around 4% year over year for ???brick and mortar??? retailers, the internet has been seeing year over year increases of 30% and higher! No small business operator should exclude the internet when crafting a marketing plan.
Speaking of the search engines, both Google and Yahoo! have their own advertising networks. Google has its Ad Words program while the Yahoo! Publisher Network is a comparable, though newer program. This is where you, as a small business owner, can do some of your advertising. By selecting the advertising plan that works for you, you can have your ads appear on web sites in your local area or across the world and be charged a small amount per click. In other words, you don???t pay for advertising unless someone clicks on your ad and goes through to your site. To keep clicks from getting out of control you determine the price per click and the amount per day, week, or month you are willing to pay. No busting of your small business budget!
Banner or text ads on select sites can also be helpful for your small business. If there is a web site you like and you suspect that a lot of your customers would frequent that site, contact the webmaster to learn what his advertising charges would be. Perhaps in exchange for submitting a few helpful articles, the webmaster would waive your advertising fee altogether. Or, at the very least, accept any other help you could provide [moderating a forum, answering questions, etc.].
Another way of getting the word out is through your own web site. No, you don???t need a web professional to establish your site, but it does help to have someone who can guide you through the set up process. At the very least a few pages is what you will need, so set up costs shouldn???t be terribly expensive. In addition, figure on paying monthly hosting and domain name fees but these expenses should be no more than $100-$125 per year. Pay a little extra for a web professional who can help you optimize your site [make it search engine friendly] and you???ll get your money back much quicker. Finally, check with your accountant for small business tax deductions.
You can also generate plenty of attention by writing articles, just like the one you are reading now. No, you don???t need to be a professional writer, but if you can clearly convey your thoughts and present a plan of action for your readers [such as: buy my product] you can get what amounts to be free advertising. How so? By submitting what you write to article submission sites for wider dissemination. By including helpful links in the author resource box you can cause search engines to make your web site much more visible as your article gets reprinted on other web sites. Furthermore, readers will perceive that you are an ???expert??? and will likely inquire to find out just what you are all about. You can call this, ???small business advertising on the cheap!???
No, as a small business owner you don???t have to be strapped by high advertising costs -- who has the cash to spare? Instead, the internet offers to you several cost effective ways of informing people about who you are, what you do, and where they can find you.
Select the marketing plan that works best for your small business. A mixture of all four points is a great plan of attack for many small business owners???just like you!

French, Mali forces head toward Timbuktu

SEVARE, Mali (AP) ? French and Malian forces pushed toward the fabled desert town of Timbuktu on Sunday, as the two-week-long French mission gathered momentum against the Islamist extremists who have ruled the north for more than nine months.

So far the French forces have met little resistance from the militants, though it remains unclear what battles may await them farther north. The Malian military blocked dozens of international journalists from trying to travel toward Timbuktu.

Lt. Col. Diarran Kone, a spokesman for Mali's defense minister, declined to give details Sunday about the advance on Timbuktu, citing the security of an ongoing military operation.

Timbuktu's mayor, Ousmane Halle, is in the capital, Bamako, and he told The Associated Press he had no information about the remote town, where phone lines have been cut for days.

A convoy of about 15 vehicles transporting international journalists also was blocked Sunday afternoon in Konna, some 186 miles (300 kilometers) south of Timbuktu.

The move on Timbuktu comes a day after the French announced they had seized the airport and a key bridge in Gao, one of the other northern provincial capitals under the grip of radical Islamists.

"People were coming out into the streets to greet the arrival of the troops and celebrate," said Hassane Maiga, a resident of Gao. "At night, youth from Gao went out alongside the Malian military. They scoured homes in search of the Islamists and the youth smashed the houses."

French and Malian forces were patrolling Gao Sunday afternoon searching for remnants of the Islamists and maintaining control of the bridge and airport, said Kone, the Mali military spokesman.

The French special forces, which had stormed in by land and by air, had come under fire in Gao from "several terrorist elements" that were later "destroyed," the French military said in a statement on its website Saturday.

In a later press release entitled "French and Malian troops liberate Gao," the French ministry of defense said they brought back the town's mayor, Sadou Diallo, who had fled to Bamako.

However, a Gao official interviewed by telephone by The Associated Press said late Saturday that coalition forces so far only controlled the airport, the bridge and surrounding neighborhoods. And in Paris, a defense ministry official clarified that the city had not been fully liberated, and that the process of freeing Gao was continuing.

Both officials insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Gao, the largest city in northern Mali, was seized by a mixture of al-Qaida-linked Islamist fighters more than nine months ago along with the other northern provincial capitals of Kidal and Timbuktu.

The rebel group that turned Gao into a replica of Afghanistan under the Taliban has close ties to Moktar Belmoktar, the Algerian national who has long operated in Mali and who last week claimed responsibility for the terror attack on a BP-operated natural gas plant in Algeria.

His fighters are believed to include Algerians, Egyptians, Mauritanians, Libyans, Tunisians, Pakistanis and even Afghans.

Since France began its military operation, the Islamists have retreated from three small towns in central Mali: Diabaly, Konna and Douentza. However, the Islamists still control much of the north, including Kidal.

The Pentagon said late Saturday that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told France the United States will aid the French military with aerial refueling missions.

U.S. aerial refueling planes would be a boost to air support for French ground forces as they enter vast areas of northern Mali, which is the size of Texas, that are controlled by al-Qaida-linked extremists.

The U.S. was already helping France by transporting French troops and equipment to the West African nation. However, the U.S. government has said it cannot provide direct aid to the Malian military because the country's democratically elected president was overthrown in a coup last March.

The Malian forces, however, are now expected to get more help than initially promised from neighboring nations.

Col. Shehu Usman Abdulkadir, a Nigerian in charge of regional forces heading to Mali, told The Associated Press that the African force will be expanded from an anticipated 3,200 troops to some 5,700 ? a figure that does not include the 2,200 soldiers promised by Chad.

Most analysts had said the earlier figure was far too small to confront the Islamists given the huge territory they hold.

The Mali conflict has been dominating the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which runs through Monday. On Sunday, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met in the Ethiopian capital with Mali's interim president, Dioncounda Traore.

Ban "stressed the need to pursue a political process that would lead to a consensual roadmap for the transition to full constitutional order, in parallel with ongoing military operations," according to a U.N. statement.

Traore is heading a civilian transitional government that was set up following the coup last March. No date has been set yet for elections to choose a new government.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama's lofty ideals from his inaugural address ran smack into reality Tuesday on the first working day of his second term.

Twenty-four hours after Obama pledged to tackle climate change and called for gays and lesbians to be treated equally under the law, the White House struggled to back up his sweeping rhetoric with specifics, raising questions about how much political muscle he'll put behind both issues.

Republicans were already signaling their unhappiness with Obama's agenda.

"The era of liberalism is back," said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell. "If the president pursues that kind of agenda, obviously it's not designed to bring us together."

Obama, standing before hundreds of thousands of people on the National Mall, had vowed to "respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations."

But in the White House briefing room a day later, Obama spokesman Jay Carney said he couldn't speculate about future actions. He said that while climate change was a priority for the president, "it is not a singular priority."

On gay rights, the president had declared that the nation's journey is "not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law, for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well."

But Carney said the president was speaking about his personal views and would not take federal action on same-sex marriage, which he continues to see as a state issue.

Even with his last election behind him, Obama has politics to weigh as he considers just how much effort he'll put into pursuing climate change legislation and a gay rights agenda. Both issues are backed by the president's liberal base but opposed by many Republicans and conservative Democrats.

Obama already is asking lawmakers for a lot as he starts his second term. He needs their votes to increase the nation's borrowing limit and approve billions of dollars to keep the government running. And he has pledged to pursue stricter gun legislation and comprehensive immigration reform quickly this year, neither of which can pass Congress without some GOP votes.

For environmental groups and gay rights supporters, Obama's inaugural address provided fresh hope for progress on issues that were stumbling blocks for Obama in his first term.

While Obama put into effect tougher fuel efficiency standards for vehicles, his efforts to pass a cap-and-trade bill failed on Capitol Hill due to bipartisan opposition. And despite Obama's many actions to bolster gay rights in his first term ? including repealing the military's ban on openly gay service members ? his reluctance to back gay marriage frustrated many of his liberal supporters until he ultimately voiced his support for same-sex unions last year.

Supporters of both issues say Obama will quickly have opportunities to demonstrate his commitment to their causes in his second term.

The Supreme Court will soon take up Proposition 8, a California's ban on same-sex marriage, a case that could give the justices the chance to rule on whether gay Americans have the same constitutional right to marry as heterosexuals.

Opponents of the ban have called on the Obama administration to file an amicus, or friend-of-the-court, brief to overturn the measure.

"We view the president's filing of an amicus brief in this case as the next natural step to his inaugural remarks," said Fred Sainz, vice president of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay rights groups. "His call for equal justice under the law for gay and lesbian Americans including in their committed relationships is the centerpiece of the argument against Proposition 8."

The White House has so far refused to take a position on the Supreme Court case.

For environmental groups, Obama's next best chance to make good on his inaugural address is a looming decision on the Keystone XL pipeline running from Canada to the Gulf Coast.

Obama blocked the pipeline last year, citing uncertainty over the project's route through environmentally sensitive land in Nebraska. But on Tuesday, the state's Republican governor, Dave Heineman, gave his approval to a revised route for the pipeline, a widely anticipated move that nonetheless added to the political pressure for the Obama administration to approve or reject the new route without delay.

"If we are going to get serious about climate change, opening the spigot to a pipeline that will export up to 830,000 barrels of the dirtiest oil on the planet to foreign markets stands as a bad idea," said Anthony Swift of the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Republicans and many business groups say the pipeline project would help achieve energy independence.

The State Department, which has federal jurisdiction over the $7 billion pipeline because it begins in Canada, said Tuesday that it would not be able to conclude its review during the first quarter of the year.

White House officials sought to look beyond Keystone, with aides saying Tuesday that the president may also pursue executive actions to fulfill his pledge to tackle climate change.

Backpacking Or Leisure Travels: What's The ... - grange genna

By admin

Traveling involves saving money and proper resource management to have the best vacation in the world, but seeing how expensive it is and the dropping economy of the world, some people think twice about traveling. However, many passionate travellers know how to travel without spending so much for their trouble through backpacking. There are many differences between leisure traveling and backpacking, as indicated here.

backpacks

1. No Itineraries
The defining factor of backpacking is that when you are in-location, you work with your own devices where to stay, the food you will eat the next morning, how you will travel and how to get inside nightclubs, parks, museums and other sites in the vacation area. Having no itinerary also means that you do not need to get up on schedule and pay for vacation package all at once, meaning you could save money in your own style of traveling and vacationing.

2. Safety
The biggest concern of many travellers willing to try out backpacking is safety. It is true that backpacking is not too safe a travel option, but experienced backpackers say that it is part of the challenge. This is why many backpackers advise first-time travellers to leave behind expensive items as they travel. Some items may be stolen, including credit cards and identity theft. Some backpackers also advise having property insurance when they travel just in case.

3. Adventure
Without an itinerary, you could go spend a day relaxing in a park or stay as much as you want or how much time your travel visa affords your stay. You could go on different adventures per day. These adventures might not be travel-related. For example, if you need money or free lodging and food, you could work for locals who can give you such in exchange. If you know how to get work in these foreign locations, you get to know more about the local?s culture and knowledge, and also a bit more about yourself, which makes the backpacking experience very rewarding.

Of course the Tooth Fairy's real: How parents lie in the U.S. and China

Jan. 21, 2013 ? Almost everyone teaches their children that lying is always wrong. But the vast majority of parents lie to their children in order to get them to behave, according to new research published in the International Journal of Psychology.

The study by Gail Heyman of the University of California-San Diego and her colleagues found certain variations but generally similar trends in the way parents from the US and China use the slippery concept of 'truth' to their advantage:

The percentage of parents who reported lying to their children for the purpose of getting them to behave appropriately was higher in China (98%) than in the U.S. (84%), but rates for other types of lies were similar between the two countries. A possible explanation for this difference is that Chinese parents are more likely than in the U.S. to demand compliance from their kids, and will go to greater lengths to make it happen.

Both Chinese and American parents seem to be comfortable lying to their children in order to promote positive feelings, and to support belief in the existence of fantasy characters like the Tooth Fairy.

Parents in both countries reported telling lies about a wide range of similar topics, including ones designed to influence their children's eating habits, or to dissuade children's pleas for toys or treats when shopping!

Certain specific lies are extremely common among parents in both countries, such as a false threat to abandon a child who refuses to follow the parent while away from home.

There are good reasons however to be cautious about lying to children. Previous studies have shown that when young children are deciding whom to trust they are sensitive to people's history of being honest or dishonest with them personally, so when parents lie to their children it may undermine the child's sense of trust.

These findings suggest parents should choose their battles wisely: is it really that important for them to finish all their peas? Alternative ways to encourage children to behave -- such as a system of rewards -- might have less risk of confusing them with conflicting ideas about honesty. Above all this study shows the need to stimulate debate about the acceptability of lying under different circumstances, and how children should be best raised to understand the value of honesty.

Putin signs antiadoption law, throwing pending adoptions into confusion (+video)

About 1,000 Russian children were adopted by US families in 2011, and around 50 such adoptions are pending.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / December 28, 2012

Orphan children play in their bedroom at an orphanage in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don December 19. A bill banning Americans from adopting Russian children went to President Vladimir Putin for his signature on December 26, 2012 after winning final approval from parliament in retaliation for a U.S. law that targets Russian human rights abusers.

The mood among workers in the almost 40 Russia-accredited adoption agencies, which?have survived repeated bouts of political tensions and ever-tightening regulations over the years,?was near despair Friday.

"We have two cases of adoption in court and we're just asking ourselves the same question, what will be next?" says Lyudmila Babich, of the Cold Spring, New York-based Happy Families Center.

"We have no text of this law, nor any explanations of what's supposed to happen now. So, we're waiting," she says.

Any hope that Mr. Putin might impose some restraint upon a measure that even members of his own cabinet have criticized?as possibly illegal and diplomatically disruptive were dashed Thursday when Putin explicitly endorsed the adoption ban and other tough measures against US citizens working in Russia in televised remarks.

"I see no reason not to sign the law," Putin said.

He added that he would also sign a presidential decree to improve procedures for adopting Russian orphans and abandoned children domestically, and also boost measures to help children with serious disabilities and health problems ? who were previously the major pool of orphans made available for foreign adoption.

About 1,000 Russian children were adopted by US families in 2011, down from the annual average of 3,000 or so in the past decade, and only a small portion of the 120,000 Russian children who are considered eligible for adoption. Under Russian law, a child can be offered to prospective foreign parents only after having been rejected three times by Russian families.

Framed as 'selling' children

Russian nationalists argue that it's a shame for Russian children to be "sold" abroad, and several of the lawmakers who championed the Dima Yakovlev bill argued they will sponsor further efforts to ease the plight of Russia's huge numbers of institutionalized children.

Putin lent his support to the harshest critics of international adoption Thursday, by casually likening Russian children taken into US families to economic refugees.

"There are probably many places in the world where living standards are higher than ours. So what, are we going to send all our children there?" Putin said with sarcasm. "Maybe we should move there ourselves?"?

Transgender: How to be an ally instead of an asshat | The Daily ...

As the former partner of a genderqueer person, an acquaintance and ally of a number of transgender people, an out feminist queer, and a ?bisexual? who?s attracted to people of various genders, I?ve done a lot of reading and learning about transgender people, identity, and issues since the late 1990s.? And although I don?t currently do public speaking about anything except social movements in Argentina, I?ve been afforded plenty of opportunities in the last decade or so to educate people about transgender what-have-you.

Most people who?ve asked me questions are well-meaning but afraid to offend, so I try to start with the basics and indicate that I?m open to answering anything.? Many folks don?t know where to begin and seem to think it?s safer to keep their mouths shut; I can?t count the number of times co-workers I like and respect have mumbled, ?Uh, I don?t know anything about that?? and then clamped their mouths shut. ?This may be a wise choice, given the number of non-transgender (called cisgender in academic circles) people who think it?s just fine to make trans people the butt of jokes or the monster in their latest ?art? work.

My friend and ex, G., recently had the misfortune of having to deal with one of these smug asshats at a public ceremony.? Friends of G?s partner were receiving their master?s degrees from a low-residency creative writing program, and one of the graduation-weekend readers was a middle-aged, white, male, presumably heterosexual and cisgender fiction writer who happens to teach at two educational institutions in my hometown.? G. emailed me after the graduation to ask if I knew anything about this writer, reporting that the guy had read from his latest story, about a doctor who medicates a female-to-male transsexual with too large a dose of testosterone, turning the trans man into a gorilla.? G., out to celebrate a happy occasion with a loved one, was instead reminded that the mainstream culture sees hir and other trans people as freaks and that so-called artists still feel free to lampoon them.

Ze fled the room in tears, and later emailed the director of the creative writing program, who offered her apology and forwarded G?s complaint to Mr. Clueless Writer.? As we?d expected, Mr. CW did not apologize for having turned a transgender character into an animal and a laughingstock, but instead responded to G?s email with a defense of his right to write about anything he cared to in a fictional account.? In other words, the same indefensible manure my classmates and I used to have shoveled at us 20 years ago when we protested racist, misogynist, homo-hating poems and stories in our master?s-level creative writing workshops.

I?m happy that some things have changed in the past two decades and that some heterosexual, cisgender, white men do get it.? One of them, Dan Solomon, wrote a column yesterday in response to an offensive portrayal of trans people in England?s Guardian newspaper.? Solomon recognizes his privilege as a cis het white guy, and writes about going beyond compassion to become an ally in trans people?s struggles.

Becoming an ally instead of a silent bystander afraid to ask questions begins with self-education, which is pretty easy these days with web access. ?A few reading suggestions are below.? Of course every trans person?s experience is different, so I?m including the links to only a few articles and sites.

A good place to begin is with the links in Solomon?s column:

James Hahn, Roberto Castro lead Humana Challenge

LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) ? James Hahn's family moved to Oakland from South Korea when he was 2, and he started playing golf two years later at his father's driving range.

"Just a 'Tin Cup' kind of guy," Hahn said. "Just a driving range rat."

On Friday, in only his third big-league tournament, the 31-year-old PGA Tour rookie found himself tied for the Humana Challenge lead for the second straight day.

"I'm just soaking it in, having a good time," Hahn said. "Any time that I play a good round, it feels good and makes me cherish the momentum a little bit more, because I know they're few and far between."

He had a brief, combative college career at the University of California ? "Let's just say extracurricular activities got in the way." ? and took a long, slow path to the PGA Tour. He won twice on the Canadian Tour in 2009 and spent the last three years on the Web.com Tour, winning an event last season and finishing fifth on the money list to earn a PGA Tour card.

"I just worked harder than everybody else," said Hahn, coming off a tie for 67th last week in Hawaii at the Sony Open. "I wasn't doing anything right really the first couple years, but eventually I figured it out. Just going through trial and error is pretty much how I learned to play professionally. And to this day, I still go on YouTube for swing tips."

He put together a highlight reel of his own Friday on the par-5 fifth hole at La Quinta Country Club, blasting a dead-straight drive, and hitting his second shot so pure that it went a little farther than he wanted. Undaunted, he turned to his trusty 54-degree wedge and holed a 30-foot, bump-and-run chip for eagle ? part of a late birdie-eagle-birdie run.

"It was a long-drive stat hole, so I kind of came out of my shoes a little bit," Hahn said about his 310-yard poke on the tree-lined hole.

That left him 220 yards, and he figured a smooth 3-iron was his best play

"I didn't want to really overpower a 4-iron," Hahn said. "I had a lot of adrenaline."

He made perfect contact.

"Just hit it too good," Hahn said. "Hit the center of the green, landed it 220, rolled to the back. ... I could have hit it with a 6-iron and probably hit it within 2 feet."

It didn't matter when the chip rolled in.

"I read the break perfectly, broke about 2 feet straight down the hill," Hahn said.

Hahn finished with a 5-under 67 to match Roberto Castro at 14 under after another day of perfect conditions in the Coachella Valley. Castro shot a 67 on PGA West's Arnold Palmer Private Course after they began the round tied for the lead with Jason Kokrak at 63.

Castro had the lead alone at 16 under, but bogeyed two of his last three holes ? three-putting the par-4 ninth.

"A couple slipped away there at the end, but yesterday I made a 50-footer on the last," Castro said. "Today, I felt like I hit a good putt and three-putted. So, that's stuff over 72 holes that's going to even out."

Castro is in his second season on the tour. The 27-year-old former Georgia Tech player missed the cut last week in Hawaii in his first start of the year.

"I learned a lot last year," Castro said. "One of the best things that happened to me was making a lot of the cuts early in the year. I didn't have any big finishes, but I got to play four days and I got to learn pretty quickly. I got to play with some good players and watch what they do."

Darron Stiles, Scott Stallings and Richard H. Lee were 13 under, all shooting 65. Stiles and Stallings played at La Quinta, and Lee was on the Palmer course. Kokrak had a 69 on the Nicklaus course to drop into a tie for sixth at 12 under.

Phil Mickelson shot a 67 on the Nicklaus course after opening with a 72 at La Quinta. The tournament winner in 2002 and 2004, he was nine strokes behind the leaders and two strokes off the projected cut Saturday.

"The last two holes were the first time that I actually hit solid shots and my rhythm felt good and I made good wings," Mickelson said. "I've been quick from the top. My rhythm has been off and I've hit a bunch of squirrelly shots. I made a lot of rusty mistakes."

The tournament is his first since tying for second in early November at the HSBC Champions in China, the only event he played after the Ryder Cup. He plans to play five or six straight events, a run that will end at Riviera or the Match Play Championship.

"I really want to build some momentum here on the West Coast," Mickelson said.

Russell Henley, the Sony Open winner Sunday in his first start as a PGA Tour member, had a 69 at the Palmer course to reach 11 under. He shot a 64 on Thursday at the Nicklaus course, and is 35 under in his first six rounds this year.

DIVOTS: The Palmer course had the highest scoring average the first two days at 69.596. La Quinta was next at 69.529, and the Nicklaus course the lowest at 67.923. ... Mike Weir, the 2003 champion, followed his opening 67 at La Quinta with a 75 at the Nicklaus course to drop into a tie for 130th in the 156-man field at 2 under. The Canadian has missed 16 consecutive cuts and finished only one tournament ? a tie for 70th in the AT&T National in July 2011 ? in his last 28 events. The top 70 and ties after the third round will play Sunday at the Palmer course.

AARP Endorses Indiana's Caregiver Bill - Retirement Homes

Indianapolis State Legislature Paves Way for Caregivers

AARP Indiana has gone to bat for caregivers by supporting a state income tax credit for people who care for aging relatives in their homes. The AARP state director told Public News Service that 1.3 million residents of Indiana provide $9.4 billion of unpaid care in their homes. Caregivers with income under?$110,000 per year will be eligible for a $5,000 state income tax credit.

The legislation will assist Hoosiers without access to a 401(k) or retirement plan and is touted for being consistent with taxpayers wishes to be effective, yet inexpensive.

Many studies have shown that caregivers across America suffer many setbacks to help out loved ones. The MetLife Mature Market Institute? published a comprehensive research paper on caregivers stating: ?The total estimated aggregate lost wages, pension, and Social Security benefits of these caregivers of
parents is nearly $3 trillion.?

The report stated that there are other important problems: ?For all working caregivers, it is not unusual also to report missed opportunities for promotions, business travel, relocation, and education as workplace effects of providing care. Overall, both current wages and retirement income can suffer as a result.?

People who age in place are potential candidates for Assisted Living and Continuing Care residences.

Finding a Reliable Car Service Company for Your Travels

If you are traveling a long distance, either for business or personal reasons, driving to your destination might be cheaper than flying. A reliable car service company can offer you peace of mind and value for your money.

When looking at a car hire business, you need to decide what kind of automobile you wish to rent. You also have to look at prices, the policies of the service, and any extra fees that are attached. Regardless of why you need to hire a car service, you want to know that you are using a reputable business that offers reliable transportation for its customers. Before you do anything else, you must establish what your needs are for the vehicle you are planning to rent. Your budget also plays a role in the choices you must make. Most rental companies will not rent to anyone who is under the age of 21, so age is also a factor that must be considered.

The type of vehicle that you wish to rent from the car service is another important consideration. If you will be travelling with your family or a larger group, find out if you can rent an SUV or a van. If you must stick closely to a budget, an economy automobile would be your wisest choice. On the other hand, if you can afford some luxury, ask for a luxury vehicle to take you where you want to go.

Evaluate all of the fees that a company charges. You also need to carefully look over the policies that the business maintains. You do not want to end up paying more than you can afford, so you need to ask about every fee. How many miles can you travel in a day? Do they have an insurance plan available to renters? How much does the plan cost? Is a credit check required? You need to ask the car service all of these relevant questions before you continue with the process of renting the vehicle.

Compare prices from one business to another. Until you check with various competitors, you have no way of knowing if you are about to sign papers for a good deal or a bad one. Look around your city or town to locate the best deal. Contact each prospective company by telephone or by e-mail. Check their websites to find additional information. If there are prices listed on their site, you still should call to verify that these prices are correct.

Do you need to hire a car service? Consider various fees and the types of cars offered at each business. To make the right vehicle decisions, please read the following: http://nolalimo.com.

Va. killer shows bits of humanity before execution

JARRATT, Va. (AP) ? He gave a nod and a wink before he sat down in the electric chair, then he uttered two statements as contradictory as the man himself: a Gaelic expletive and "God bless."

Robert Gleason Jr. was playful and vicious, a protector and a predator. He was likeable and reprehensible. He sent Christmas cards and made me laugh on a bad day.

He was also a killer. And on Wednesday night I watched him die.

I couldn't help but smile as Gleason strung together his last words, a mix of movie and song references that baffled the men in dark suits that lined the death chamber and the citizens and reporters with me listening intently from our green and white plastic chairs. He and I had talked several times over the past three years about what he'd say when he got there. It changed a few times. It got much shorter as the day drew closer, as he feared he'd trip over his own meticulously chosen words.

In the end, he settled on lines from the Johnny Cash version of "Jackson," which reminded him of the woman he regretted losing, and "Take it to the Limit" by the Eagles because it represented the final motorcycle ride he never got to take. I knew the expletive was coming ? he'd repeated it often in his thick Boston accent. I must say I was surprised by the "God bless," though.

Gleason flashed a thumbs up as they put the metal helmet on his head and clamp on his calf, perfectly censoring a large pinup girl tattoo. He went out on his own terms, choosing 1,800 volts of electricity over lethal injection partly because he didn't want to go lying down.

It's easy to call Gleason a monster. I'm not even sure those who knew and loved him would disagree. He killed at least three men ? strangling the last two while locked up in the state's most secure prisons. He'd been imprisoned for killing a man whose son was cooperating with the probe of a drug ring he was involved in.

But there was something about him that made me want to know more. And he was more than willing to oblige.

I'll never know exactly why Gleason opened up to me. It wasn't infatuation. He only crossed the line once, sending me a flirtatious letter. I told him to cut it out, and he never did it again.

Nor was it to convince me that he was innocent or to ask for my help, like countless other letters I've received from prisoners as an AP reporter. Rather, he openly discussed the graphic details of each of his crimes, and he believed passionately that he deserved to die for them.

What he wanted from me, I believe, was someone to hear him out and to tell his story. I think he also liked that I didn't tell him what he wanted to hear. We had disagreements ranging from how I wrote my stories about him to how he treated his lawyers. Several times he told me I was one of the only people in the world he trusted.

I'd first written to Gleason to request an interview after he killed his cellmate, Harvey Watson Jr. in 2009. To my surprise he wrote back within a week and was more than willing to talk. As I sat across from him at Red Onion State Prison months later, he vowed that he would keep killing until the state put him to death ? a threat he would repeat many times as he sought to speed up his execution.

He was moved to a prison where inmates spend 23 hours each day in segregation, but months after he first made the threat he managed to strangle another inmate, Aaron Cooper, through a separate recreation cage. I've kept in contact with Cooper's mother, Kim Strickland, since then. Although she had religious objections to capital punishment, Gleason persuaded her to testify that he deserved to die by sending her excerpts from the Bible preaching an eye for an eye.

We tell ourselves those sentenced to death are not like us. How could they be? What would that say about us?

But in Gleason I found someone who was, in many ways, like the rest of us.

This killer loved his family and was fiercely protective of them. He talked often of his mother, who died of cancer when he was young, and of his children and how he wished he'd been a better father.

He joked with my colleagues who answered when he phoned from death row and complained about the "lousy Red Sox." He helped organize a motorcycle ride to raise money for a kid with cancer, and he took pride in the tattoos he spent years drawing on sailors, bikers and drunk coeds, and also in those that covered his own body.

We laughed about our accents, and how his Boston inflection was as distinguishable as my Appalachian twang. He signed almost every letter "Bobby from Boston" and reminisced about growing up in nearby Lowell, Mass.

As his execution neared, Gleason returned to Lowell in his dreams. He said he wished he'd gone back there one last time before getting locked up.

He was self-deprecating, sarcastic and always ready with a joke at an inappropriate time. He once quipped during court proceedings, "Even Ray Charles can see that, your honor."

After killing Cooper, he wrote to tell me about it and included a drawing of a man peeking over a prison wall saying, "Here we go again." Inside, he signed it "The new and improved Boston Strangler." He didn't laugh, though, when I put that in my story. It was one of several times the killer and the reporter didn't see eye to eye.

Still, it's difficult to reconcile the guy who fretted over pictures of oil-drenched pelicans after the Gulf oil spill with the one who could kill so easily that he once likened it to grabbing a beer from the refrigerator.

Gleason was adamant that he had no remorse for the lives he'd taken. He believed that before you killed a person, you'd better be able to live with what it will do to their mothers, their kids and other loved ones. If you can't live with that, you have no business killing, he said.

He once asked why I stuck with him and his story for so long, writing to him and taking his calls when most others had long tired of him. It was my job, I told him, adding that I'd stick around through his execution. Plus, I told him, he was quite fascinating.

So on Wednesday I was there again, this time to tell the world his punishment had been carried out.

And I was there to say goodbye.

Can I call Bobby Gleason a friend? As a reporter I'm not sure I should. After all, we're taught that you go into every story with an open mind, that you keep your feelings and beliefs from interfering. And this was a murderer, a man who not only took life but took it more than once ? and was well aware of what he was doing.

This is real life, though, with all the grays between the black and the white of evil and good. There's simply no way to spend that much time interacting with someone, anyone ? to learn about them and their fears and their history ? and not gradually begin to see them as more than just a cold killer identified by a number.

I do know one thing: I may eventually forget Prisoner No. 1059266. But I doubt I'll ever forget Bobby Gleason.

UO Athletic Director Responds To Coach Kelly?s Departure

The University of Oregon is looking for a new head football coach. Chip Kelly announced Wednesday he?s leaving for the NFL to lead the Philadelphia Eagles. UO Athletic Director Rob Mullens says player recruiting is underway so this is a less than ideal time for Kelly to leave. Mullens describes what they?ll be looking for in a new coach.

Mullens: ?You know, what we want is someone who understands the culture, it is unique here not only within our football program but within our community. Want someone who has proven excellence, who has been around winning programs who knows what it takes because the expectations for this program have shifted. And we want to compete for PAC-12 championships, and we want to be in BCS bowls and so we want someone who understands what that takes.?

Mullens says Coach Kelly has been great for Oregon football and has left it in a better place. The school is facing possible NCAA sanctions for the use of recruiting services.

Video - Grant Achatz's "Next Restaurant": The Hunt - - Portland Food ...

Every time Grant Achatz?s Next Restaurant rolls out a new menu, they produce a video to go with it. Their current video is for a menu called ?The Hunt?. It?s not for the faint of heart, as it includes hunting, butchery, blood, etc., but it certainly makes it clear just what ingredients go into your dinner ? and it is beautifully done.

"I have a wide-range of food experience - working in the restaurant industry on both sides of the house, later in the wine industry, and finally traveling/tasting my way around the world. Population-11.2 million
Languages spoken- Common, Rostovanian
Brief Summary of Nation- A break-off colony from Rostovanya to the West, Calabanya is a freedom-loving island nation, its citizens enjoying a surplus of art, ethnic foods, and festivities often. Gaining independence was not easily won for this nation, having to go through a long, bloody conflict with its Mother Land, and then only being able to survive after a long reconstruction process. As such, the citizens of Calabanya hold their very liberal freedoms close to them, sometimes making the nation's diplomatic activities rather confrontational. More than once this nation has stood up to tyrants half-way around the world, sending in their signature "Peacekeeper" troops to protect civilians' "Universal Rights".

Cepheia

Full nation name- Federation of Cepheia
Short nation name- Cepheia
Type of government- Federal Democracy
Head of State, title- Amon Baal, President
Capital City- Cepheia
Resources/Exports- Aluminum, Oil, Heavy Minerals, Specialized Machinery

Population- 256,234,944
Languages spoken- Common, Cepheian, Mankian
Brief Summary of Nation- Cepheia is an old nation with a rich history. It has a strong military, though it is a generally neutral nation in most foreign affairs. While its space program is the best in Amardom, and while it is highly advanced in engineering and military technology, it still has a difficult time adapting to new social ideas and policies. Older and newer generations are often in conflict, sometimes violenty via riots and crime, creating a strange outward appearance of technological superiority, while having a tumultuous domestic atmosphere. Nevertheless, Cepheia remains one of the most powerful nations of Amardom. Cepheia is also the birthplace of the Hetosian religion.

The Only Chinese Automaker At Detroit Offers 'Tweeter And Sackbut' In Its Cars

The Only Chinese Automaker At Detroit Offers 'Tweeter And Sackbut' In Its CarsIn feng shui, "Chi" is the universal energy field that surrounds each of us. "Trump" is a wealthy buffoon who, by all appearances, is the product of an intimate encounter between a Connecticut WASP and an errant Homo erectus. The "Trumpchi," is a car by Chinese automaker GAC. Got it? Not yet, you don't.

You see, the Trumpchi isn't your typical Chinese import cipher, seemingly rolled out of the mid-1980s into the Detroit Auto Show for our amusement and edification. It's a reworked Alfa Romeo 166. If your first response is "get the fuck out of here," you're right. And I will. Just as soon as I tell you about the Guangzhou Automotive Group Trumpchi Sedan. Did I mention it's based on an Italian car last sold in Italy in 2007?

What could possibly go wrong.

Remember this: Chinese carmakers have been reluctant to show their wares here in Detroit ever since The Great Leap Sideways, also known as the Hysterical Laughfest At Chinese Automakers' Expense Of 2006.

That year, I returned home from the show with at tea set in a little wooden box. A tea set. All I had to do was sit in a Geely (or was that a Chery?) and inhale the pungent aromatic hydrocarbons of the Chinese adhesives, then grab my neck with both hands and pretend to asphyxiate while my colleagues looked on, chuckling. And they gave me a freaking tea set. The PR girl bowed slightly, presenting it to me, as if it were a treasured heirloom and I an honored guest. I almost cried.

It was a year of strange, partly-formed cars with crooked badges and signs and speeches with ill-translated marketing messages. It was the year Changfeng Motors showed off its Black Giant SUV, proudly proclaiming in a video that, "strong power drives its mighty body!" and then Changfeng's Chairman Li took to the stage and announced ? to a massive crowd of international media ? "I am going to come all over you." He probably meant Changfeng would soon be everywhere in America, but he couldn't have gotten the phrasing more hilariously wrong if Adam Reed wrote his dialog for him.

Since then, most Chinese automakers have kept clear of the Detroit Auto Show, mainly appearing to show off electric cars and do weird stuff like taking Matt Hardigree on an insane ride around the Cobo basement.

For 2013, only one Chinese company showed up. That was Guangzhou Automotive Group (tag line: "Detailing Greatness"), tucked away on the concourse off the main floor. GAC, China's sixth-largest automaker, is known mainly as a maker of Honda products for the Chinese market. In 2010, it launched the Trumpchi, a luxury-ish sedan whose appeal to the Chinese middle class is mainly a function of its presumed domestically branded status. Will they bring it here? Perhaps. Will you be able to get an Alfa 166 for Chinese-car money?

Ok, We're Excited About That

The Alfa Romeo 166 was a good car. Jeremy Clarkson put most colorfully back in 2007, when he gushed, "It's as though the 166 came down a pipeline from the gods." Imagine looking under the hood of the car you bought for the price of a Chevy Malibu and seeing those delicious chrome intake runners of an Alfa Romeo 3.2-liter V6. Oh the joy that would bring.

Hold On A Second...

The vehicles GAC showed here in Detroit were hybrids with gear from AC Propulsion of San Dimas, California. The Trumpchi Hybrid, which looks very little like a 166, can travel 62 miles on electric power. C'mon. Isn't buying a hybrid Alfa Romeo like dating a supermodel with narcolepsy?

But wait. Among its many features are Tweeter and Sackbut, which is not a 1960s novelty country music duo from Hee Haw. Actually, I have no idea what those things are, but they must be important, because they're listed right near Rear Children Lock. No doubt, children lockdown is something all parents can get behind, at least after they scarf down six packs of gummi worms and a juice box.

And before you ask, the answer is yes, the Trumpchi Hybrid does come with ATA and IMMO, which ? strangely enough ? was a 1960s novelty country music duo from Hee Haw.

Is That It?

No. GAC also has a hybrid SUV, the GS5-BEV. That's not exciting. But there's also the E-Jet concept, a very sleek looking sedan that wouldn't be out of place on Acura's turntable. Sadly, that will ride on a new, compact-car platform, and not on an aging Italian-car platform. After all, it's no Dodge Dart.
