The credit crunch and double dip recession has left us needing to pinch pennies in order to survive. The cost of everything has gone up. It all appeared to begin with a massive rise in fuel, our petrol and diesel went from under a pound a litre to well over a pound. The cost of food increased in our supermarkets -- this is partly a knock on effect from the rise in fuel.

One way of making savings is by walking rather than taking short car journeys and wasting fuel. Another place to save money is in the supermarkets. We could switch to supermarket own brands in many cases or try to not waste food; we do tend to throw a lot of fresh produce away. A good way to save money is by not spending our hard earned cash on buying lunches and making sandwiches to take to work instead. The odd coffee or glass of wine at lunch time all adds up at the end of the month.

Buy your fruit and vegetables at a farmer's market or at local farm shops, the quality and price are a lot better. The reason for this is because it cuts out the middle man. Another way to save money is to plan your meals and only buy what you really need to prepare your food. It is a great mistake to wander around a supermarket without a plan as there is the tendency to pick up anything that looks tasty, leading to a huge bill and loads of wastage.

Many families ask themselves where they can make sensible savings. The answer lies in the utility bills and other household expenses.

Many homes are now fitted with water metres and water bills are rising -- a good idea is to be aware of how much water you are using and to cut down. Your bill could go down by ?20 per month if the tap is not left running unnecessarily or you use the washing machine less by being more conscious.

It could be that you are able to save gas and electricity costs by switching, there are great comparison sites online that are able to tell you who are the cheapest suppliers in your area. Switching could save you up to ?50 per month in some cases.

The next commodity to consider is your home phone, broadband and television provider. There are some great deals offering phone line and broadband for free or half price for six months. It is worth taking out a bundle offering free calls during evenings and weekends.

Search online for money saving websites who can provide comparisons of the utility providers and more, home phone offers are always on. Consider buying telephones online as well as other entertainment equipment such as televisions with massive discounts available.

8 Modern Astronomy Mysteries Scientists Still Can't Explain

The vastness of space and the puzzling nature of the cosmic objects that occupy it provides no shortage of material for astronomers to ponder.

To round up some of the most enduring mysteries in the field of astronomy, the journal Science enlisted help from science writers and members of the Board of Reviewing Editors to choose eight puzzling questions being asked by leading astronomers today.

As Robert Coontz, deputy news editor at Science, writes in his introduction to the series, the participants decided that, "true mysteries must have staying power," rather than being questions that might be resolved by research in the near future. In fact, while some of the topics discussed may one day be solved through astronomical observations, others may never be solved, he added.

In no particular order, here are eight of the most compelling mysteries of astronomy, as presented by the journal Science:

What is dark energy?

In the 1920s, astronomer Edwin Hubble discovered that the universe is not static, but rather is expanding. In 1998, the Hubble Space Telescope, named for the astronomer, studied distant supernovas and found that the universe was expanding more slowly a long time ago compared with the pace of its expansion today.

This groundbreaking discovery puzzled scientists, who long thought that the gravity of matter would gradually slow the universe's expansion, or even cause it to contract. Explanations of the universe's accelerated expansion led to the bizarre and hotly debated concept of dark energy, which is thought to be the enigmatic force that is pulling the cosmos apart at ever-increasing speeds.

While dark energy is thought to make up approximately 73 percent of the universe, the force remains elusive and has yet to be directly detected.

"Dark energy might never reveal its nature," Science staff writer Adrian Cho wrote. "Still, scientists remain optimistic that nature will cooperate and that they can determine the origins of dark energy."

How hot is dark matter?

In the 1960s and 1970s, astronomers hypothesized that there might be more mass in the universe than what is visible. Vera Rubin, an astronomer at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, studied the speeds of stars at various locations in galaxies. [Top 10 Strangest Things in Space]

Rubin observed that there was virtually no difference in the velocities of stars at the center of a galaxy compared to those farther out. These results seemed to go against basic Newtonian physics, which implies that stars on the outskirts of a galaxy would orbit more slowly.

Astronomers explained this curious phenomenon with an invisible mass that became known as dark matter. Even though it cannot be seen, dark matter has mass, so researchers infer its presence based on the gravitational pull it exerts on regular matter.

Dark matter is thought to make up about 23 percent of the universe, while only 4 percent of the universe is composed of regular matter, which includes stars, planets and humans.

"Scientists still don't know what dark matter is, but that could soon change," Cho wrote. "Within years, physicists might be able to detect particles of the stuff."

But while astronomers may soon be able to detect particles of dark matter, certain properties of the material remain unknown.

"In particular, studies of runty 'dwarf galaxies' might test whether dark matter is icy cold as standard theory assumes, or somewhat warmer ? essentially a question of how massive particles of dark matter are," Cho explained.

Where are the missing baryons?

If dark energy and dark matter combine to make up roughly 95 percent of the universe, regular matter makes up about 5 percent of the cosmos. Yet, more than half of this regular matter is missing.

This so-called baryonic matter is composed of particles such as protons and electrons that make up most of the mass of the visible matter in the universe.

"As astronomers count baryons from the early universe to the present day, however, the number drops mysteriously, as if baryons were steadily vanishing through cosmic history," wrote Yudhijit Bhattacharjee, a staff writer at Science.

According to Bhattacharjee, astrophysicist suspect the missing baryonic matter may exist between galaxies, as material that is known as warm-hot intergalactic medium, or WHIM.

Locating the missing baryons in the universe continues to be a priority in the field of astronomy, because these observations should help researchers understand how cosmic structure and galaxies have evolved over time.

How do stars explode?

When a massive star runs out of fuel and dies, it triggers a spectacular explosion called a supernova that can briefly shine more brightly than an entire galaxy.

Over the years, scientists have studied supernovas and recreated them using sophisticated computer models, but how these gigantic explosions occur is an enduring astronomical puzzle. [Gallery: Supernova Explosions]

"In recent years, advances in supercomputing have enabled astronomers to simulate the internal conditions of stars with increasing sophistication, helping them to better understand the mechanics of stellar explosions," Bhattacharjee wrote. "Yet, many details of what goes on inside a star leading up to an explosion, as well as how that explosion unfolds, remain a mystery."

What re-ionized the universe?

The broadly accepted theory for the origin and evolution of the universe is the Big Bang model, which states that the cosmos began as an incredibly hot, dense point roughly 13.7 billion years ago.

A dynamic phase in the history of the early universe, approximately 13 billion years ago, is known as the age of re-ionization. During this period, the fog of hydrogen gas in the early universe was clearing and becoming transparent to ultraviolet light for the first time.

"Some 400,000 years after the big bang, protons and electrons had cooled off enough for their mutual attraction to pull them together into atoms of neutral hydrogen," science writer Edwin Cartlidge stated. "Suddenly photons, which previously scattered off the electrons, could travel freely through the universe." [Big Bang to Now in 10 Easy Steps]

A few hundred million years later, the electrons were stripped off the atoms again.

"This time, however, the expansion of the universe had dispersed the protons and electrons enough so that the new energy sources kept them from recombining. The 'particle soup' was also dilute enough so that most photons could pass through it unimpeded. As a result, most of the universe's matter turned into the light-transmitting ionized plasma that it remains today."

What's the source of the most energetic cosmic rays?

The source of cosmic rays has long perplexed astronomers, who have spent a century investigating the origins of these energetic particles.

Cosmic rays are charged subatomic particles ? predominantly protons, electrons and charged nuclei of basic elements ? that flow into our solar system from deep in outer space. As cosmic rays flow into the solar system from elsewhere in the galaxy, their paths are bent by the magnetic fields of the sun and Earth.

The strongest cosmic rays are extraordinarily powerful, with energies up to 100 million times greater than particles from manmade colliders. Still, the origin of these strange particles has been an enduring mystery.

"After a century of cosmic ray research, the most energetic visitors from space remain stubbornly enigmatic and look set on keeping their secrets for years to come," wrote Daniel Clery, deputy news editor at Science.

Why is the solar system so bizarre?

As astronomers and space observatories discover alien planets around other stars, researchers have been keen to understand the unique characteristics of our solar system.

For instance, while extremely varied, the four innermost planets have rocky outer shells and metallic cores. The four outermost planets are vastly different and each possess their own identifiable features. Scientists have studied the process of planetary formation in hopes of grasping how our solar system came to be, but the answers have not been simple.

"Looming over all the attempts to explain planetary diversity, however, is the chilling specter of random chance," wrote Richard Kerr, a staff writer at Science. "Computer simulations show that the chaos of caroming planetesimals in our still-forming planetary system could just as easily have led to three or five terrestrial planets instead of four."

But the search for alien worlds could help scientists hoping to gain insights into the planets closer to home.

"Help might come from planets orbiting other stars," Kerr wrote. "As exoplanet hunters get beyond stamp-collecting planets solely by orbit and mass, they will have a far larger number of planetary outcomes to consider, beyond what our local neighborhood can offer. Perhaps patterns will emerge from inchoate diversity."

Why is the sun's corona so hot?

The sun's ultrahot outer atmosphere is called the corona, and it is typically heated to temperatures ranging from 900,000 degrees Fahrenheit (500,000 degrees Celsius) to 10.8 million degrees F (6 million degrees C).

"[F]or the better part of a century, solar physicists have been mystified by the sun's ability to reheat its corona, the encircling wispy crown of light that emerges from the glare during a total solar eclipse," Kerr said.

Astronomers have narrowed down the culprits to energy beneath the visible surface, and processes in the sun's magnetic field. But the detailed mechanics of coronal heating are currently unknown.

"Just how the magnetic field transports the energy is much debated, and how the energy gets deposited once it reaches the corona is even more mysterious," Kerr wrote.

Google Play Store Gets Fleshed Out With Galaxy Nexus Accessories

accysWhen Google launched the new Devices section of their Google Play Store, it only seemed like a matter of time before the company would eventually expand beyond selling just the unlocked Galaxy Nexus. After all, it's called the Devices section for a reason. While rumors of forthcoming Nexus tablets dance in our heads, Google has recently started carrying some new gear in the Play Store, though they're decidedly not new or flashy. Users can now pick up Samsung vehicle and desktop docks to prop up their Galaxy Nexuses when needed, but here's the thing -- not all of you will be able to use them.

A Perfect Mix: Kids and Gardening - Style Sheet - HGTV Canada

There are countless ways in which gardening is beneficial to children. It's fun, healthy, educational and empowering. They might not realize its worth, but really, that's not the point.

A young grower, deservedly proud of her wheatgrass. Photo by Jennifer Tibbitt.

Few approaches to education can be more effective than the hands-on variety; without doubt, gardening is all about being hands-on. What a special, fun opportunity for kids: they get a space of their own, they are encouraged to get dirty and mucky (bonus: play with water), and they get front-row seats ? rows of seeds, mind you ? at the wonder of growth.

As with any instructional process, it is important that the teachers approach the pupils with patience and care. Gardening is always a work in progress, and is best not ?shovelled? in on the day before a major deadline. Youngsters derive the most benefit (and, again, not just educational but fun) from being involved at every step possible.

Kids and Gardening: The basics

  • Start small (1 pot) for really little kids, gradually doling out more space as they grow older.
  • Pick a crop: little kids can handle bigger seeds, smaller seeds for bigger kids; let them grow whatever they desire.
  • Challenge tweens and teens to plant a variety of crops, harvest and then cook. It will encourage healthy eating.
  • Congratulate them on all their hard work in the garden ? they should be proud!

Kids and Gardening: The age groups

Young kids: Start any time
Whether it's by helping you make a mess digging in the dirt and dropping a seed into the ground, letting them water the soil, or giving them a pot to plant up ? kids can start gardening at any age. And the sooner, the better. Teach them the simple first steps: how to cover the seed with soil and gently water. Sunflowers, nasturtiums, peas or beans are all good starter seeds, as the reward (growth) is quick to come.

From kids to tweens: Let them make their own decisions
As young gardeners gain confidence, they can claim more space, whether it be a plot of their own or a few more balcony pots. Let them grow whatever catches their imagination, be it flowers, veggies or basket upon basket of strawberries. Errors will be made, tears might ensue (especially if basket upon basket of strawberries should fail to grow), and there can even be anger (at all ages!). Still, life lessons apply, such as learning from your mistakes and problem solving. And all that hard work results in beautiful plants they can, and will, be proud of.

Teens: A different kind of green?
Particular challenges can arise when kids hit their teen years (not just in gardening, of course). Perhaps somewhere, sometime they hear that digging in the ground isn't hip, or maybe their interest wanes. Nevertheless, be patient: They often return after a brief wander out in the world. Sometimes a little incentive helps ? as in, cash. I recall, during my eye-rolling teen years, the best garden in the neighbourhood was the one where we got paid 25 cents per weeded row (I guess that ages me!).

Look, a teenager who's not playing video games! Photo by Jennifer Tibbitt.

FOR KIDS OF ANY AGE: Don?t be bossy
Cast aside any bossy tendencies, as children quickly tire of the same old parental lecture (older kids especially). It?s up to you to work beside the kids and be -- here's that term again -- patient. Don?t forget that you are sowing the seeds of a future green-thumber, so let them make a mess! (Make a bit of a mess yourself, and remember how fun it was to be young!) And if you find them following you around the garden while you weed and water? Congratulate yourself for bringing another gardener into the fold.

Self-taught gardener Jennifer Tibbitt has developed a natural view of gardening based upon native and non-native plants, organic enrichment, heirloom varieties and using the existing terrain and growth to lead a garden in new directions. Originally a prairie wildflower, Jennifer has gardened coast-to-coast, from Vancouver to Halifax. After settling in Toronto, she established Dirt Mamas in 2000.

Apple must open up its 'crystal prison': report

3 hrs.

As the devices we use become more powerful, companies like Apple and Microsoft are exerting more control over how we use them. There is an increasing backlash against restrictions placed on how we can use our PCs and mobile phones, and the cause is being taken up by pundits of ever higher visibility. Recently?Steve Wozniak, one of Apple's founding members, called for the company to open up its software ecosystem, and the?Electronic Frontier Foundation, a free speech and?consumer and?advocacy organization, has echoed that sentiment with an article that calls Apple's devices and operating systems a "crystal prison."

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBCUniversal.)

For many users, the walls of this prison never seem to close in. There are thousands upon thousands of apps and games, useful features, and frequent updates from Apple. But for a growing minority (something which has a habit of eventually becoming a majority), the restrictions are worrying.

The EFF describes many of these deliberate limitations in detail, but here are some of the headline complaints ? not limited to Apple:

  • Apple's iOS disallows the installation of applications from anywhere but the official store, and the upcoming version of OS X discourages it strongly.
  • Every app in must be individually approved by Apple, sometimes with seemingly arbitrary conditions.
  • Users are unable to personalize the look and feel of their iPhone or iPad, and cannot improve or modify security settings like firewalls, VPNs or multiple users.
  • People who have installed custom software on their iPhones are no longer covered under warranty for hardware defects and things like cracked screens.
  • Microsoft is restricting some manufacturers from allowing the installation of any operating system but Windows 8 on certain hardware.
  • Carriers like AT&T insist on locking down phones with custom software (including invasive items like Carrier IQ) and "bloatware" apps that can't be removed.

These practices are good for the companies' bottom line, but they also erode trust and prevent some users from doing what they want to do with the devices they own.?

The EFF suggests that Apple, being the pioneer in this area of walled gardens and crystal prisons, should be the one to lead people out. Android has shown that a platform can be open to tinkering while still being fairly secure and liked by casual users, and?Apple has the clout and industry cred to help set a new standard.

Today, things like alternate OSes and third-party apps are only a matter of concern to power users and hackers. But as more people come to rely on these devices for a growing?variety of purposes, from music and movies to video calls and professional functions, these restrictions will become more and more visible.

New Jailbreak for iPad and iOS 5.1.1 Out Today & I?ve Got a Jailbroken iPad 3

Jailbroken iPad 3

Just in case you haven?t heard yet, the new jailbreak for iPads and iOS devices running iOS 5.1.1 has been released today. It?s called Absinthe 2.0, and is the result of collaborative efforts and tons of hard work by the Chronic Dev Team and iPhone Dev Team.

It?s available to download now at the greenpois0n site ? with versions available for Mac, Windows, and Linux. This jailbreak is for devices running iOS 5.1.1 only ? and the greenpois0n page lists all the supported iOS devices.

I have successfully jailbroken my (test unit) iPad 3 this morning. It took a fair bit longer than with previous jailbreaks, but that was primarily due to just a single issue ? which was easy to resolve once I found out how. Hit the break for lots of detail on the Absinthe 2.0 jailbreak process on my iPad 3 ?

Here?s a quick rundown of my experience with Absinthe 2.0 on the iPad 3 today:

? I used the instructions provided on the greenpois0n site, which are as follows:

1. Make a backup of your device in iTunes by right clicking on your device name under the ?Devices? menu and click ?Back Up?.

2. Once your backup is complete return to your device and go to Settings ? General ? Reset ? Erase all Content and Settings. This will make the jailbreak process much faster.

3. Open Absinthe and be sure you are still connected via USB cable to your computer.

4. Click ?Jailbreak? and wait?. just be patient and do not disconnect your device.

5. Once jailbroken return to iTunes and restore your backup from earlier. Right click on your device name under the ?Devices? menu in the left panel of iTunes and click ?Restore from Back Up?? then select the latest backup you created before. (restoring this backup will return all the content previously on your device ie, apps, photos, etc.)

6. Thanks for using Absinthe, enjoy your jailbroken iDevice!

The jailbreak process ran to roughly 75% of the way through its progress bar quite quickly and then froze for several minutes. It eventually spit up this error:

Hmm something seems to have gone wrong, trying to recover

At that point my iPad was back at a normal lock screen and the jailbreak had failed. I did some quick web searching, saw that many users were getting this, and found a quick solution via an ?Old Faithful? sort of source ? the everythingiCafe forums, and specifically the suggestion made by moderator and superhero Europa in this thread on the new jailbreak. The solution was to ignore the greenpos0n site instructions to do an erase of all settings on the iPad itself and instead do a standard Restore to iOS 5.1.1 while connected to iTunes on a PC.

I did that and the jailbreak ran through quickly and successfully for me and Cydia was installed. It took under 5 minutes this time round. Here are screenshots of the how the process should go in a successful Absinthe 2.0 jailbreak:

Once you?ve downloaded an unzipped the Absinthe download you should see this folder and the Absinthe app in it:

Absinthe Folder

When you open the Absinthe app you?ll get this initial screen:

Absinthe 20 on iPad 3

Once you click Jailbreak you?ll get a series of quick status updates on that same screen, like these:

Absinthe progress screen 2

Progress bar 3

Porgress Bar 4

And finally this one when it completes successfully:

Absinthe success message

I hit a few minor issues after the successful jailbreak. I?ll cover those, and the fixes for them, in a separate post or two that I?ll publish soon.

Are any of you jailbreaking your iPads today? If so, hope it has gone well for you (or goes well for you later) and would love to hear your thoughts and questions in the comments.

home insurance pittsburgh There are more cars and drivers hitting the road each year. With countless vehicles on the road, crashes will happen. Automobile insurance can be the difference between a small setback and a major hassle. So how do you know what insurance you need and how much to buy? Coverage requirements vary by state/province but usually include the following: It pays for damages due to bodily injury and property damage to others for which you are responsible. Bodily injury damages include medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. Property damage includes damaged property and loss of use of property. If you are sued, it also pays your defense and court costs. State laws usually mandate minimum amounts, but higher amounts are available and usually recommended. Personal injury protection: This is required in some states and is optional in others. Sometimes referred to as no-fault coverage, this pays the medical treatment for you or your passengers regardless of who was at fault. It may also cover lost earnings, replacement of services and funeral expenses. The minimum amount of this insurance is typically set by the state. Medical payments: This coverage is available in non-no-fault states; it pays regardless of who may have been at fault. It pays for an insured person?s reasonable and necessary medical and funeral expenses for bodily injury from a crash. Collision: Pays for damage to your car caused by an accident. Comprehensive: This applies if your car is stolen or damaged by causes other than collision, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured motorist: Pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have liability insurance or by a person who cannot be identified (usually a hit-and-run driver). Under-insured motorist: Pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have enough liability insurance to cover the full amount of the damages. Other coverage, such as emergency road service and car rental, is also available.Your auto insurance payments vary by company and will depend on several factors, including: * What coverage you select * The make and model of the car you drive * Your driving record * Your age, gender and marital status and * Where you live Some have come to think of auto insurance as a necessary evil, but it can truly rescue your economic health Evaluate your needs, do your research and with the help of your insurance agent choose the option that best suits you. property insurance

Every young star has to go through the certain rites of passage: your first starring role, landing a platinum debut album, first fake tabloid headline. On Saturday, Justin Bieber earned his stripes by allegedly getting into an altercation with a paparazzi photographer.

According to TMZ, Bieber is a suspect in a criminal battery investigation after he got into it with a photographer on Sunday at a mall in Calabasas, California, where the singer lives. The site reported that the unnamed photographer was attempting to snap a shot of Bieber when a physical altercation took place between them.

The photographer called 911 after the incident, but when the police arrived Bieber and girlfriend Selena Gomez had already left the scene. The camera man was transported to a local hospital by ambulance after complaining of pain in his upper torso and released a short time later.

He filed a police report naming Bieber,18, as the culprit and police are now investigating the incident as a misdemeanor battery case and are looking to speak to Justin and Gomez and other witnesses. Police were told by witnesses that the photographer had been blocking Bieber's car as the "Boyfriend" singer was trying to leave the mall. After Bieber exited his car and asked the man to move, a scuffle broke out when he would not.

A spokesperson for Bieber could not be reached for comment.

TMZ also reported that several witnesses claimed that after the fight a lawyer approached the shooter and said he could get "a lot of money" out of the incident and advised the paparazzo to call for an ambulance and file a police report.

(AP) ? Top-ranked Victoria Azarenka survived a scare in the first round of the French Open.

The Australian Open champion, who took over the No. 1 ranking by winning in Melbourne, came back to beat Alberta Brianti of Italy 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-2 Monday.

Brianti, a 32-year-old veteran who has won one WTA title in her career, won the first set and then led 4-0 in the second before losing six straight games.

Although Azarenka won 12 of the last 14 games, she struggled with her game throughout, committing 60 unforced errors.

Azarenka started the 2012 season with a 26-match winning streak. Her first loss came in the quarterfinals of the Sony Ericsson Open.

She is now 36-3.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Just playing at this year's French Open was an accomplishment for Venus Williams. Winning was a bonus.

Williams played at a major tournament for the first time since last August, when she withdrew before her second-round match at the U.S. Open. It was then that she revealed that she had been diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome, a condition that can cause fatigue and joint pain.

It didn't slow her down in the last two sets Sunday. The seven-time Grand Slam champion recovered from a poor start and beat 19-year-old Paula Ormaechea of Argentina 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 to reach the second round.

"I just learned how to live with this. It's different. I have a lot to learn still," Williams said. "I learned how to just ? just learning. So I think that's my biggest challenge. I learn a lot every week, especially having to play a professional sport.

"So that's a challenge, just learning to live."

Williams was one of six major champions that advanced on the opening day of the clay-court tournament. The only one that lost was Andy Roddick, the 2003 U.S. Open winner.

On Monday, top-ranked Novak Djokovic and 16-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer will be on court. In the women's draw, No. 1 Victoria Azarenka and defending champion Li Na are scheduled to play.

Williams was last up in the main stadium, Court Philippe Chatrier, and she didn't get off to a good start.

Although Williams is the one with the fast serve and the pounding groundstrokes, it was Ormaechea that was on the offensive. The strategy worked, for a while.

"She played super well the first set," Williams said. "I think she really did a lot of the right things, and I have to congratulate her on the first set, and thankfully the next two sets were better for me."

Still, Williams had trouble on her serve in the final set, getting broken twice while winning four times on Ormaechea's serve.

"I wasn't able to get a foothold," Williams said. "She had some good returns. And so I had to give those to her, but I felt like I was returning well finally in the third."

U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur and former French Open winners Svetlana Kuznetsova and Ana Ivanovic also advanced to the second round.

The sixth-seeded Stosur, who lost in the 2010 French Open final, was first up on Court Philippe Chatrier. She beat Elena Baltacha of Britain 6-4, 6-0.

"It's a bit of an early start, but always nice to get through it now," the Australian said. "You have the whole day and whatever else to recover and, yeah, enjoy."

Kuznetsova won the French Open title in 2009 and the U.S. Open in 2004 but is seeded No. 26 this year. She defeated Mirjana Lucic of Croatia 6-1, 6-3. Ivanovic, the 2008 champion at Roland Garros, beat Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino of Spain 6-1, 6-1.

For the men, 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro beat Albert Montanes 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-1. The ninth-seeded Argentine played with tape on his knee early in the match, and then added a wrap after a massage from a trainer following the second set.

"It's a problem when you can't find your balance like you're used to, but I'll use these few days of rest to get better," Del Potro said. "If I go on the court, it's because I feel good. I want to continue playing."

Juan Carlos Ferrero, the 2003 French Open champion, beat Jonathan Dasnieres de Veigy of France 6-1, 6-4, 6-3. The 32-year-old Spaniard is one of 37 men in this year's draw that is 30 or older, an Open era record for Grand Slam tournaments.

"I saw myself in the mirror, and when I walk on the court I don't think about whether I'm younger or older. The only thing I try to do is play well," Ferrero said. "And I'm at Roland Garros, and the idea is to play well today."

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the highest-seeded player in action on Sunday at No. 5, also advanced. The Frenchman defeated Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

After Tsonga wrapped up his victory, it was time for Williams to get on court. And although she made it through to the next round, many are still wondering how long her game can last.

"Oh, I already know I can play. That's not a doubt," Williams said. "Everything else is up in the air."

Tile Floors, Concrete Sealer, and Other Home Improvement ...

When you?re looking to tackle a home improvement project, there are countless things you could do to add value to your home. With housing prices as they have been, you may be wondering if it?s worth it to undergo such difficult tasks. There are many good reasons to pursue the tasks at hand. No matter how low housing prices become, your home will be more likely to sell?if the decision is ever made. Anything that you can do to improve the quality of your home makes it more competitive in the housing market. Furthermore, anything you do to your home provides a benefit for you and your family while you are living there. Consider these interesting ideas for home improvement:

?

Basement

Some individuals have unfinished basements used primarily for storage. The truth is that finishing your basement can provide greater benefit than you receive from its current uses. One major element to consider when thinking about finishing a basement is the type of flooring. Concrete floors are durable, stylish, and relatively inexpensive. When you decide to install concrete floors, remember to use concrete sealer. Concrete sealer becomes absorbed into the small pores on the surface of the concrete. It creates a chemical change and reaction that helps protect your floor from damage and stains. Using the right sealer can help increase the durability without diminishing the necessary traction.

?

Tile Floors

Removing linoleum and laying a tile floor can add a touch of class and sophistication. There are countless different sizes, colors, and textures when it comes to tile floors. If you plan on doing the job yourself, you may need to rent a special type of saw that requires water. This instrument?s use of water helps prevent the tile from breaking as you cut your exact measurements. When you have the measurements made, the tile cut, and the necessary materials, you are only a few steps away from having a beautiful tile floor. Remember to spread the mortar and set the tile in such a way that you don?t end up cornering yourself without a means to escape. If you neglect this last step, you may need to walk on your freshly set tiles and restart the project. When it comes to filling the joints with grout, you may want to compare the color of the tile and find a color that complements the tile and the room itself.

?

Home improvement can be a fun and fulfilling task. If you decide on concrete floors, remember concrete sealer. If you decide to tile your floor, remember to carefully follow every step.
