Business Resolutions for 2013 | Geoff Livingston's Blog

Dawn and the Washington Monument

A new year is upon us, and like many others I have a few resolutions for my business and online life.

In addition to discussing the environment more frequently, here are some of my goals:

Less Travel

Philly During the Day B&W

Last year was my worst travel year since 2009, doubling my normal road time. This travel was in large part to support Marketing in the Round (co-author Gini Dietrich also travelled extensively). By my calculations, I traveled at least one day a week 60% of the year, and from March until December it was more than 80%.

The impact on my family and personal exhaustion was significant.

There is no new book to promote in 2013. While I?m always game to travel for business reasons, the marketing and social media speaking circuits will see less of me next year? Unless people are willing to pay a significant fee.

It?s not about making money, rather creating a significant barrier so that I am on the road less. I want to be present for my daughter.

Business Only

It seems like I?ve had a serious pet project for each of the last three years. Whether it was fighting for the Gulf, writing and promoting books, or starting a company, there was an extra project at hand in addition to normal consulting.

In 2013, I intend to work hard in my business (including here on this blog), and turn off the lights. It?s a year to recharge the batteries, focus on what matters most, and run and bike outside.

My extra project for 2013 is being a Dad and a husband. That?s enough.

Take a Photography Class

Jefferson's Vegetable Garden Terrace

I receive a lot of compliments about my photography, which as a self taught amateur pleases me to no end. But I?d like to improve on my hobby a little.

Plus photography helps me relax, providing an easy creative outlet that doesn?t involve the rigmarole of developing, writing, publishing and marketing a book.

So next year, I will invest some time and take a photography class. Here is to learning new insights!

Meditate

When a human doing stops to become a human being, it?s inevitable that you start to think. A lot.

That?s OK. Meditation bears creative fruit, always. That?s my experience.

So what?s next after some serious rest? Who knows? I certainly have a couple ideas now, but after meditation they could be completely invalid.

Until the path is clear, living in the present for a little while seems appropriate.

I?m sure just working hard, taking great pics, and meditating during off hours will produce a vision.

What are your business resolutions for 2013?

9 die as tour bus crashes on icy Oregon highway

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) ? The stretch of rural Oregon interstate where a tour bus crashed through a guardrail and plummeted 100 feet down a steep embankment is so notorious that state transportation officials have published a specific advisory warning of its dangers.

Nine people were killed and more than two dozen injured when the charter bus veered out of control around 10:30 a.m. Sunday on snow- and ice-covered lanes of Interstate 84 in eastern Oregon, according to the Oregon State Police.

The bus crashed near the start of a 7-mile section of road that winds down a hill. It came to rest at the bottom of a snowy slope, landing beaten and battered but upright with little or no debris visible around the crash site.

The East Oregonian said it spoke with two South Korean passengers, ages 16 and 17. Both said through a translator that they were seated near the rear of the bus when it swerved a few times, hit the guardrail and flipped. They described breaking glass and seeing passengers pinned by their seats as the bus slid down the hill. Both said that they feared for their lives.

The paper said that the teens, one of whom injured a knee and the other suffered a broken collarbone, were staying at a hotel arranged by the Red Cross.

More than a dozen rescue workers descended the hill and used ropes to help retrieve people from the wreckage in freezing weather. The bus driver was among the survivors, but had not yet spoken to police because of the severity of the injuries the driver had suffered.

Lt. Gregg Hastings said the bus crashed along the west end of the Blue Mountains, and west of an area called Deadman Pass. The area is well known locally for its hazards, and the state transportation department advises truck drivers that "some of the most changeable and severe weather conditions in the Northwest" can lead to slick conditions and poor visibility. Drivers are urged to use "extreme caution and defensive driving techniques," and warned that snow and black ice are common in the fall through the spring.

The bus had been carrying about 40 people. St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton treated 26 of them, said hospital spokesman Larry Blanc. Five of those treated at St. Anthony were transported to other facilities.

Blanc did not elaborate on the nature of the injuries but told the Oregonian that the hospital brought in additional staff to handle the rush of patients and did a lot of X-ray imaging.

I-84 is a major east-west highway through Oregon that follows the Columbia River Gorge.

Umatilla County Emergency Manager Jack Remillard said the bus was owned by Mi Joo travel in Vancouver, B.C., and state police said the bus was en route from Las Vegas to Vancouver.

A woman who answered the phone at a listing for the company confirmed with The Associated Press that it owned the bus and said it was on a tour of the Western U.S. She declined to give her name.

A bus safety website run by the U.S. Department of Transportation said Mi Joo Tour & Travel has six buses, none of which have been involved in any accidents in at least the past two years.

The bus crash was the second fatal accident in Oregon on Sunday morning. A 69-year-old man died in a rollover accident on I-84, about 30 miles west of where the bus accident took place.

A spokesman for the American Bus Association said buses carry more than 700 million passengers a year in the United States.

"The industry as a whole is a very safe industry," said Dan Ronan of the Washington, D.C.,-based group. "There are only a handful of accidents every year. Comparatively speaking, we're the safest form of surface transportation."

Sunday's Oregon bus crash comes more than two months after another chartered tour bus veered off a highway in October in northern Arizona, killing the driver and injuring dozens of passengers who were mostly tourists from Asia and Europe. Authorities say the driver likely had a medical episode.

Obama says Newtown shooting his worst day as president

    By Agence France-Presse
    Sunday, December 30, 2012 12:11 EST

    ?

US President Barack Obama said in an interview broadcast Sunday that the massacre at a Connecticut elementary school which killed 20 young children was ?the worst day of my presidency.?

Obama also expressed skepticism about a proposal by the gun lobby group The National Rifle Association to introduce armed guards in every US school and admitted there would be resistance to new proposals to control firearms.

?The question ? becomes whether we are actually shook up enough by what happened here that it does not just become another one of these routine episodes where it gets a lot of attention for a couple of weeks and then it drifts away,? Obama said.

?It certainly won?t feel like that to me,? Obama said in an interview with NBC?s ?Meet the Press.?

?This is something that was the worst day of my presidency. And it?s not something that I want to see repeated.?

Obama has promised to unveil broad-based proposals to rein in gun violence in the United States in the New Year, but has also said he believes there is a right in the US Constitution for individuals to bear arms.

He has committed to putting a halt to gun violence at the top of his agenda for his second term, though his remarks Sunday did not appear to signal an all-out effort to shape public opinion on the issue.

On December 14, a disturbed man, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, killed his mother in their Newtown, Connecticut home before embarking on a horrific shooting spree at a local elementary school.

He blasted his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School and shot dead 20 six- and seven-year old children and six adults with a military-style assault rifle before taking his own life with a handgun as police closed in.

The bloodshed, the latest in a string of mass shootings in the United States, reopened a national debate on the country?s gun laws, which are far more lax than in most other developed nations.

The choice in the national debt crisis: Sink or swim together

by Paul R. Sebastian, Ph.D. Gallipolis Daily Tribune

Our country is headed toward a real cliff beyond the so-called ?fiscal cliff? that approaches on January 1 as automatic deep cuts in government spending and increased taxes kick in and drag the whole economy down, unless an agreement is made before or shortly after that date. A quick fix to avoid the fiscal cliff would not solve the problem because still looming would be unsustainable budget deficits and debt which has increased more than a trillion dollars ($1,000 billion) per year or 51 percent in the last four years from $10.7 trillion to $16.2 trillion or about $150,000 per family. Under George W. Bush, it increased 88 percent from $5.7 trillion in his eight years. ObamaCare, as now formulated, won?t help the deficit or the economy because of the expansion of Medicaid for the poor. So both parties are at fault.

This year?s budget deficit is about $1.1 trillion (one-third of the total budget of $3.5 trillion which is a very high 22.4 percent of gross domestic product = total value of all goods & services produced in a year = total national income of $15.6 trillion). The interest alone on the federal debt is $258 billion per year, making up 10.8 percent of federal revenues. It will be much higher once interest rates go up again. We owe two-thirds of the debt to American holders of treasury securities including the Federal Reserve Bank and one0-third of it or $5.4 trillion to foreign creditors, especially Communist China ($1.2 trillion = 7.1 percent), Japan ($1.1 trillion = 6.8 percent), and the oil exporting countries ($262 billion = 1.6 percent).

We just can?t keep borrowing one-third of the federal budget indefinitely. It?s impossible! Something has got to give. Yes, the U.S. Treasury can borrow from the Federal Reserve Bank by selling it bonds (IOUs) in exchange for printing up more money so to speak (also IOUs ? ?Federal Reserve Note? is written on every dollar bill). So the Federal Reserve Bank?s Balance Sheet has Treasury bonds (IOUs) as assets backing up our currency as liabilities (Federal Reserve Notes ? IOUs). But more money chasing after the same amount of goods is a formula for eventual inflation, i.e., higher prices. We?ve already done too much of that which increases the money supply ? creating money out of nothing as the dollar bill buys less and less.

Sooner or later, the credit of the U.S. Government will disappear. Our creditors will lend the Government less and less money and won?t renew their treasury securities that mature. After all, they know that the dollar will go down in value because of increased inflation and it will be worth less and less on the international markets. Can any family survive by rolling up credit card debt equal to a third of its income year after year, borrowing from one credit card to pay off the other? Of course, the family has to cut back drastically and do without things they are accustomed to having.

At this rate we are headed toward financial collapse which would mean runaway inflation and an almost worthless dollar that will be brutal toward everyone with savings and fixed income through pensions and annuities. It happened to Germany twice in its history. To stabilize such an economy severe austerity measures (a big shock) would be necessary, leading to much higher taxes and deep cuts in government spending ? much less in defense, government programs, entitlements and health care for the poor, etc., low investment, business bankruptcies, and a deep recession if not a depression with massive unemployment and perhaps social chaos. Italy, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, and especially Greece are hurting. Austerity programs in the latter, for example, have caused riots.

The current fiscal cliff pales in comparison to the big cliff. To avoid the latter, it is crucial that we formulate a long-range strategy, such as gradually increasing austerity or a long series of mini-shocks so that the economy can adjust. A quick fix band aid won?t cut it. It only postpones the day of reckoning and kicks the can of worms down the road to the next generation. In that way we?ll create bigger problems in the long run more difficult to solve ? perhaps a monster incapable of solution.

Cooperation. There?s no way that the people of the United States will ever be able to pay back the debt, but balancing the budget with a small surplus for the debt would stabilize the economy. It?s a huge task in our entitlement society to balance the budget, let alone have money left over to pay off the debt. To prevent our country from going over the precipice, the victors and the vanquished in this election must reach out to each other, compromise, and work together for the common good. If the ship of state sinks, Democrats and Republicans, all of us will go down with it.

To prevent the worst, everyone ? conservatives and liberals ? must work together wherever possible for the good of the country. As they should, liberals care about the poor, but expect Big Government to do it all. Responsible conservatives also care about the poor, but through the churches and faith-based charities, community organizations, state and local governments, individual and business social responsibility.

There?s still time to right the ship. Republicans and Democrats in Congress must stop the rigid gridlock and be objective and flexible. To solve our debt problem, a lot of sacrifice will be required. We?ll have to drastically cut spending and social programs. There are agonizing choices as to where to make cuts ? damned if we do; damned if we don?t. People with different interests will scream: ?not my benefits; not my program; not my tax deductions (as for charitable donations); not my tax credits?. There?s a limit to how much spending can be cut (i.e., discretionary spending); most is fixed (interest on the debt, Social Security, Medicare, pension payments, etc.). So, let?s face it ? the T word. We?ll have to pay more taxes. Both sides must yield to compromise.

With cut government programs for the poor, we can?t leave the needy hanging out to dry. We?ll have to do much more as individuals and businesses with our time, talent and treasure. We?ll have to give more of our time to the church and community in volunteer work. We?ll have to be more generous in donating to charities. Churches will have to do more. Community organizations will have to do more. Businesses will have to be more involved than ever with the community and give back more of their resources. After all, the citizens of the community are the life blood, support, and sustenance of every business as employees, customers, lenders through their bank savings, and as investors. Yes, it?s all about sacrifice for the common good ? all of us.

We can alleviate the debt crisis if we as individuals and as a nation make sacrifices now. The longer we wait, the worse it will get. Austerity when a financial collapse is imminent would be much, much worse.

Pray for the good of the country that these fears are not realized. We must right the ship of state before it goes over the falls. He won; we lost, but we can help him to become a successful president for the common good of the country. It?s not important who gets the credit.

Expectations low for White House 'fiscal cliff' meeting

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and congressional leaders were to meet on Friday for the first time since November with no sign of progress in resolving their differences over the federal budget and low expectations for a "fiscal cliff" deal before January 1.

Instead, members of Congress are increasingly looking at the period immediately after the December 31 deadline to come up with a retroactive fix to avoid the steep tax hikes and sharp spending cuts that economists have said could plunge the country into another recession.

With taxes on all Americans set to rise when rates established under former President George W. Bush expire on December 31, lawmakers would be able to come back in January and take a more politically palatable vote to cut some of the tax rates.

U.S. stocks fell on Friday, with the Dow Jones industrial average dropping 0.48 percent as investors fretted about the lack of certainty.

But some in the market were resigned to Washington going beyond the New Year's Day deadline, as long as a serious agreement on deficit reduction comes out of the talks in early January.

"Regardless of whether the government resolves the issues now, any deal can easily be retroactive. We're not as concerned with January 1 as the market seems to be," said Richard Weiss, a Mountain View, California-based senior money manager at American Century Investments.

The new factor in the mix was involvement by Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who held conversations with Obama this week and said he expected a new proposal from the president that he would consider.

The White House spent much of Thursday stifling expectations for any new offer from Obama, beyond the limited fallback plan he outlined in vague terms on December 21, which would protect what he described as "middle class Americans" from the tax hikes, extend unemployment insurance and lay the "groundwork for further work" on deficit reduction and tax reform.

The major sticking point on taxes is Republican opposition to hikes on anyone, particularly in the absence of heavy cuts in spending for so-called entitlement programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, the government-run health programs for senior citizens and the poor.

Democrats in Congress want to keep lower tax rates for most Americans but raise them on those earning above $250,000 a year.

"The wealthy have got to kick in," Senator Debbie Stabenow, a Michigan Democrat, said Friday on CNN. "The tough part is in the House, where they have taken this very extreme position" of "protecting the wealthy at all costs," she said.

"It's feeling very much to me like an optical meeting than a substantive meeting," said Republican Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee, noting that it was not a sign of urgency to set a meeting for mid-afternoon with a deadline just days away.

"Any time you announce a meeting publicly in Washington, it's usually for political theater purposes," Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, said on Thursday on Fox News.

"When the president calls congressional leaders to the White House, it's all political theater or they've got a deal. My bet is all political theater," said Graham, adding that he did not believe an agreement could be reached before the deadline.

39;Green steel' inventor wins innovation award | Eco News

Leading Australian researcher Professor Veena Sahajwalla has won the $30,000 top prize in the Innovation Challenge awards run by The Australian newspaper.

A passionate recycler, she was honoured for her patented ?green steel? process, in which old rubber tyres and plastic are used to replace some of the coke in the electric arc furnaces that generate power for the production of steel.

The revolutionary approach has been commercialised locally and overseas by Australia?s largest manufacturer of long steel products, OneSteel.

As a result it has already prevented more than a million tyres from ending up in landfill and helped reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Scientia Professor Sahajwalla is director of the University of New South Wales Centre for Sustainable Materials Research and Technology.

Her interest in mining the mountains of rubbish and waste materials produced by modern society and re-using them in industrial processes or to create new goods was sparked early in life.

?As a child growing up in India I walked to school past huge waste dumps picked over by desperately poor communities,? she said.

?I always wanted to turn that waste into something we could absorb back into industrial production.?

The Australian, a News Limited publication, reported that the innovation competition attracted hundreds of entries, including a folding flat-pack house; a DNA test that would help breed horns out of beef cattle; a wave energy converter; a computer program that allows students to conduct laboratory experiments on the internet; and do-it-yourself hearing aids.

Professor Sahajwalla won the $5000 prize in the Manufacturing and Hi-tech Design category of the competition as well as the overall $25,000 prize.

She is Associate Dean Strategic Industry Relations of the UNSW Faculty of Science and is one of Australia?s best-known engineers and scientists, having been a judge on the ABC TV program The New Inventors.

She has received many awards including the 2011 National Nokia Business Innovation Award at the Telstra Business Women?s Awards and the Banksia Environmental Foundation?s 2012 GE Eco Innovation Award for Individual Excellence.

In May she was appointed as a commissioner on the Australian government?s Climate Commission.

Two Arrested Over Christmas Eve Murder Of Church Organist Alan Greaves

Two men were being questioned on Saturday night about the murder of church organist Alan Greaves, who was attacked on his way to midnight mass on Christmas Eve.

Mr Greaves, 68, was just yards from his church in High Green, Sheffield, when he was badly beaten.

He was discovered by a member of the public and taken to hospital but died from his injuries on Thursday night.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "A man in his 20s and a man in his 40s, both from Sheffield, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently in custody helping police.

"Officers are searching a number of properties in the area and there has been a high-visibility police presence in High Green today."

Detectives are still appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information about the murder.

Mr Greaves, a grandfather and father-of-four, died after sustaining serious head injuries at about 11.15pm on Christmas Eve after leaving his home to go to St Saviour's Church.

Police are treating his death as murder and have said the motive for the attack is unclear.

His widow, church community worker Maureen Greaves, 63, told The Sun last night: "There was no motive.

"We are devastated. It is just not what you expect, somebody to walk down the street and get murdered - and at this time of year as well, it's just dreadful."

Canon Simon Bessant, from St Saviour's, described Mr Greaves as a "good man" who fell victim to an evil act.

He said: "He was a gentle soul. He wasn't foolish - he would have handled the situation as best as anyone would, but we don't know what he encountered."

The Bishop of Sheffield, Dr Steven Croft, has sent a message to every parish in his diocese asking for prayers for Mr Greaves, his widow and their family.

In it, Dr Croft said: "Alan Greaves died on Thursday night following injuries received in an attack on Christmas Eve as he was on his way to church.

"He was a Reader and organist at St Saviour's Mortomley and High Green in Sheffield.

"He was married to Maureen, a Church Army Evangelist, and both Alan and Maureen were widely involved in serving their local community for many years. They have four grown up children.

"Please would you hold Alan's family and the church family at High Green, with Simon Bessant the Vicar and the wider family of Church Army, in your prayers in the coming days and especially this Sunday morning.

"I plan to be with the congregation at High Green on Sunday morning."

    Honour for Higgs boson physicist

Physicist Peter Higgs, after whom the Higgs boson particle is named, has been recognised in the New Year Honours.

In the 1960s, Prof Higgs and other physicists proposed a mechanism to explain why the most basic building blocks of the Universe have mass.

The mechanism predicts the existence of a Higgs particle, the discovery of which was claimed this year at the Large Hadron Collider.

Prof Higgs has been made a Companion of Honour.

The recognition confers no title but is restricted to a select group of 65 for achievements in the arts, literature, music, science, politics, industry, or religion.

His discovery announced in July this year of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson immediately led to calls for the 83-year-old to be knighted.

He is now also considered to be a candidate for a Nobel prize, perhaps in conjunction with other physicists who reached similar conclusions at the same time.

Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Higgs was inspired at school by the work of physicist Paul Dirac, who helped lay the foundations of quantum mechanics and predicted the existence of antimatter.

After obtaining his PhD from King's College London, he held academic positions at the University of Edinburgh and then London before returning to the Edinburgh to lecture at the Tait Institute of Mathematical Physics.

According to one popular version of the story, Prof Higgs came up with the concept during a walk in the Cairngorms. But in an interview earlier this year, he told BBC News that there was no "eureka moment".

Best explanation of Higgs boson? Continue reading the main story

The Higgs mechanism explains why the building blocks known as elementary particles have mass. According to the idea, these particles acquire mass through their interaction with a field that permeates space.

The theory predicts the existence of a new particle, which also carries Prof Higgs' name. But six physicists - including Higgs - are now generally credited with the formulation of the concept.

The idea initiated a decades-long effort to detect the particle in experiments. However, it remained elusive until this year, when scientists at the $10bn LHC particle smasher announced that they had found a particle consistent with the Higgs boson.

The probable discovery added a final missing piece to the framework known as the Standard Model, which stands as the most widely accepted theory to explain how particles of matter interact.

At the time of the announcement, Prof Higgs told reporters: "It's very nice to be right sometimes."

He added: "At the beginning I had no idea whether a discovery would be made in my lifetime because we knew so little at the beginning about where this particle might be in mass, and therefore how high an energy machine would have to go before it could be discovered.

"It's been a long wait but it might have been even longer, I might not have been still around."

Shortly after the boson news this year, Edinburgh University, where Higgs is an emeritus professor, announced a new centre that would carry his name. The Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics will be housed at the university's James Clerk Maxwell Building.

The particle earned a nickname - the "God particle" - supposedly because of its importance to the Standard Model. But Prof Higgs stated that he disliked the term because it "might offend people who are religious".

This week, in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, Prof Higgs criticised fellow academic - and staunch atheist - Richard Dawkins for his stance towards religious believers.

Prof Higgs said: "What Dawkins does too often is to concentrate his attack on fundamentalists. But there are many believers who are not fundamentalists. Fundamentalism is another problem. I mean, Dawkins in a way is almost a fundamentalist."

Also honoured are Sue Gibson, professor of chemistry at Imperial College London, who is becomes an OBE; Prof Richard Holdaway, director of RAL Space, which helps co-ordinate civil space activities, who becomes a CBE; and Carol Vivien Robinson, professor of chemistry at the University of Oxford, who is made a Dame.

Best wine over Christmas - Elitistreview

Back in 2010 I had the greatest Chablis of my life: Chablis Premier Cru Fourchaume ?Vignoble de Vaulorent? 2007 from Fevre. I had a bottle on Christmas eve and it remains the greatest Chablis I?ve tried in my life. My comments in the previous note still pretty much apply, only this was more complex and subtle, without losing any of the vibrant energy or classy life. It is just the complete Chablis experience.

Chablis 'Vignoble de Vaulorent' 2007, Fevre I was rather surprised that a wine of this fulgurating quality was bottled with a composite cork. This may have implications for it?s long term storage, I suppose, which is a bit of a shame as this is clearly a Chablis with a glorious life ahead of it. But you don?t need to wait, it shows everything at five years old with style and ?lan, throbbing with quality and bursting with style. If, like my associate Mr P (who is open-minded enough to call me Davy), you are fortunate enough to own a case of this I?d really start drinking. He has promised to pop a bottle when I meet him in April ? if I was that kind of person I?d be wetting myself in anticipation.

So you must be thinking this insanely fine Chablis will set you back an arm and a leg from some merchant who requires your first-ranked teddy bear as deposit. Not so! You can get it for ?29 a bottle from The Wine Society. In these enlightened times greater bargains are rarely found. I may go and score myself another couple of bottles right now.

We drank this coruscating Chablis with a chicken from the supplier of the best chickens I?ve eaten on a regular basis ? Beechcroft Direct. Here?s the bird:
Roast chickenIf?I am brutally honest, I overcooked?the?chicken just a little; something I?very rarely do

Editor Dani's goose fat roast potatoes

He cooks the best roast potatoes I have eaten, when my meat/oven requirements allow for perfection, and no one else even comes close. Sorry Linda.

So it?s been a happy few days in Elitistreview Towers, we have drank well although not excessively, and eaten appallingly brilliantly. Nothing matched that ?29 Chablis, though!

    Happy holidays!

UFO-shaped gas station among this year's 'Preservation Wins'

    21 hrs.

It?s a travel itinerary as eclectic as they come: From a gas station shaped like a UFO, to an inn once proclaimed one of the most magnificent hotels in the country, to mystical rock pillars that fascinated an ancient culture.

Put them all together and you have part of a collection that may make history buffs smile and explorers reach for their maps.

Behold the list of ?Preservation Wins of 2012? put together by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a nonprofit organization that has made it its mission to save America?s historic sites.

?These are places that were threatened in some way ? whether it was demolishing them or (fearing they would) fail and maybe they wouldn?t be preserved ? and essentially, they ended up being maintained or restored,? said Rebecca Morgan, a spokeswoman for the trust.

The list was assembled in no particular order???Morgan declined to rank the successes, calling each a great save.

Here are the sites that made the cut:

    Cesar Ch?vez National Monument???Keene, Calif.
In October, President Obama designated the property known as Nuestra Se?ora Reina de la Paz???the home, workplace and burial site of labor leader C?sar Ch?vez ? a national monument.

?This site marks the extraordinary achievements and contributions to the history of the United States made by C?sar Ch?vez and the farm worker movement that he led with great vision and fortitude,? the presidential proclamation reads.

?La Paz reflects his conviction that ordinary people can do extraordinary things.?

National Trust President Stephanie Meeks applauded the move, noting it was a big first step in celebrating the life and legacy of Ch?vez.

    Howard Theatre ? Washington
This historic landmark, which helped launch the careers of Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Marvin Gaye and The Supremes, sat vacant for decades, the trust said.

But in the spring of 2012, it was restored to its original 1910 appearance after a $29 million renovation. The venue is now once again showcasing artists and drawing stars including B.B. King, Little Richard and Tracy Morgan.

    Michigan Bell Building???Detroit, Mich.
Built in 1929 as the headquarters for Western Electric, this building was transformed this year from a vacant warehouse into a mixed-use space that will provide housing for the homeless, the trust noted.

The Neighborhood Service Organization, a Detroit nonprofit group, took charge of the project, creating 155 furnished, one-bedroom apartments inside the structure, along with a health care clinic, gym, library, computer room, art and music rooms, and a chapel.

'The Flying Saucer' Phillips 66 Gas Station???St. Louis.
When local preservationists found out this former gas station was threatened with demolition, they launched a public campaign to save the landmark, the trust said. Built in 1967, the glass and concrete building features a 120-foot circular roof and is a ?prized example of mid-century modern architecture,? the activists told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Their work paid off. In September, the saucer-shaped structure opened as a Starbucks and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Chimney Rock National Monument???Pagosa Springs, Colo.
Located on more than 4,000 acres in the San Juan National Forest and home to the ancestors of the modern Pueblo Indians, this area was designated a national monument by President Obama in September.

?It is a living landscape that shapes those who visit it and brings people together across time,? he noted in a statement.

The ancient inhabitants who lived here 1,000 years ago left behind more than 200 homes and ceremonial structures on the mesa overlooking the two stone spires called Chimney Rock and Companion Rock. The moon rises perfectly between the rocks every 18.6 years.

The National Trust calls the area the single most important cultural site managed by the U.S. Forest Service.

    Pillsbury A Mill???Minneapolis, Minn.
Declaring the mill ?a masterpiece of industrial architecture and the largest and most advanced facility in the world at the time of its completion in 1881,? the trust included the vacant complex on its list of America?s 2011 Most Endangered Historic Places.

But this year, local lawmakers gave a thumbs-up to a plan which will convert the building into 250 low-income apartments.

    Los Angeles Boyle Hotel???Los Angeles
Built in 1889, the hotel later fell into disrepair and was converted into an apartment complex. The nonprofit East Los Angeles Community Corporation bought the property in 2006 and began an extensive renovation, seeking to restore some of its grandeur. The project was completed in August, with many of the original features back in place, including the grand staircase and foyer, the brick fa?ade, and the corner cupola and cap.

    Emerson School???Denver
This 1885 schoolhouse underwent a ?green rehabilitation? in May, and now features a new geothermal heating and cooling system, a complete interior rehabilitation, window restoration, and new fencing, trees and landscaping.

Wake Forest Biotech Place???Winston Salem, N.C.
Two former R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. warehouses now serve as a state-of-the-art life sciences center. Opened this year, this development enhances Winston-Salem?s rich history and architectural heritage, the trust said.

    Hotel Lafayette???Buffalo, N.Y.
When it opened its doors in 1904, this inn boasted a grand lobby, enormous windows and posh rooms, prompting reviewers of the time to proclaim it "one of the most perfectly appointed and magnificent hotels in the country,? according to its biography. What I learned about science blogging/writing this year

I experimented with topics, lengths, forms, and voices, quite a lot this year, trying this and that to see what works for me, what works with the readers, etc. This is what I learned:

I can still write a standard ResearchBlogging type of post of reasonable length, yet covering all the context it needs.

And I can post it at the time embargo lifts. And I can get quite nice traffic for it:

    How barley domesticated its clock

I can blog a conference, even if the topic is not my narrowest area of expertise.

I wanted to learn how to cover a meeting like a journalistic pro. Instead, Editor-in-Chief told me ?No, you should blog it?. So I did. And I had fun, I added my own photos, and people in the field liked it:

#2012SVP ? what do Vertebrate Paleontologists talk about?

I can get outside of my area of expertise when the new cycle requires it, learn about it fast, and become a temporary expert on it.

And then get interviewed and quoted by the other new outlets as if I really am an expert on the topic:

Did NYC rats survive hurricane Sandy?

But my personalized follow-up on the Big News story, does not work as well as the original.

But heck, at least I finally got to publish some old photos:

    No rats in Ryder Alley

I can write on deadline, with word-limit, and I like getting my stuff edited.

When all the editors started nominating stories for our Top Ten 2012 Stories list, I suggested ENCODE, so I was assigned to write about it. I was worried about having to re-write everything from scratch, so I turned it in two days ahead of deadline. When I got the piece back, edited by Phil Yam, it looked very, very red on my screen. But as I started checking all the edits, I realized that each edit was small ? a punctuation here, a word-order there, a small change in wording, etc. No huge changes, but LOTS of tiny changes. And each little thing made my article a little bit better. All the changes together made my article much better. So I am quite happy how it turned out:

Publication of the ENCODE Encyclopedia: A Milestone in Genome Research

Long posts with strange structure can work well.

I experimented with coverage of several papers in a single post. I covered each one briefly, had subheadings (e.g., What is it about, What is new, Take-home message, Some more thoughts, Good coverage elsewhere, etc), finishing with my own summary of how all of the papers fit together, how they move the field as a whole forward. And it got quite decent traffic:

Clocks, metabolism, evolution ? toward an integrative chronobiology

I can write fast, publish as embargo lifts, and STILL manage to get a lot of context and lot of my own thoughts.

It helps that I have written, few years before, a very involved post on a related topic, so I could draw from that pool of information, build up on it. Many people told me they really loved this post:

Stumped by bed nets, mosquitoes turn midnight snack into breakfast

Totally quirky stuff has its own fans.

It started with a bet that I could seriously use the word ?callipygous? in a science article. That led me on a search for topics in which I could potentially use it. That brought me to spiders (yes, it could have been sheep instead). So I wrote a completely stream-of-consciousness post connecting all sorts of seemingly unconnected things about spiders. I wrote about spiders before. I talked about spiders very recently. I saw the Spider exhibit at the AMNH just before it. I included bits and pieces of all of that somewhere in the post. And I timed the post to show up on the anniversary of ?Charlotte?s Web?. All of that combined into a quirky post with surprising twists and turns, cool scientific information, fun videos, personal stuff, and more. And people just loved it:

Charlotte?s Web: what was she smoking?

I can write REALLY fast! And lack of time for over-thinking makes it better.

I heard about the study at 8am. I published my post at 11am. While multitasking other stuff I had to do at the time. Yes, I carefully read the paper first. And the paper got lots of media coverage elsewhere, yet the author contacted me to tell me specifically how well I did it. And the PIO in charge of the paper bought me a beer a few months later for giving the paper so much visibility and good coverage. And the post even resulted in a comic strip, the original of which is now hanging on the wall of the institution where the research was done. My favorite post of the entire year:

Tigers take to the night ? for peaceful coexistence with humans

Next year, I?ll try some new approaches, do new experiments, try to make it fun for me and you. We?ll see how it works out in the end?.
