Catalan film beats Almodovar into Oscar race (Reuters)

MADRID (Reuters) ? Spain nominated a film in Catalan for the first time ever on Wednesday as its candidate for Best Foreign Language Film at the upcoming Academy Awards, ahead of a picture by two-time Oscar winner Pedro Almodovar which stars Antonio Banderas.

The Spanish Cinema Academy chose "Pa Negre" (Black Bread), which is set in northeastern Catalonia shortly after the 1936-39 Civil War, and all of whose dialogue is in the regional Catalan language.

Other films that had been short-listed for Spain's official entry were "The Skin I Live in," Almodovar's first film with Banderas in more than 20 years, and "La Voz Dormida" (The Sleeping Voice), another film dealing with the Spanish Civil War's brutal aftermath.

"It's great news. 'Pa Negre' depicts diversity and wealth as positive values and not damnable handicaps," producer Isona Passola told journalists after hearing the Spanish Academy's decision.

"I think it's laughable to say there have been many (films) about the Civil War. Wars provide great material for cinema because in them the world's great ideals come into play," she added.

"Pa Negre" was the surprise winner in February of nine "Goyas" -- Spain's equivalent of the Oscars -- after it had been seen by a modest audience of 500,000 and grossed just 2.6 million euros ($3.5 million) at Spanish box offices.

One of those Goyas went to the film's Agusti Villaronga for best director, and he went on to recently win the National Cinematography prize in Spain. Villaronga, 58, has also won seven Ariel prizes, awarded by Mexico's film academy, for his 2002 work "Aro Tolbukhin."

The film's title refers to low-quality bread many had to eat after the war, if they ate at all, and is seen through the eyes of Andreu, a boy whose parents were on the losing side in the conflict which stirs controversy to this day in Spain.

As well as Francesc Colomer, in the role of Andreu, the film stars Sergi Lopez, who also acted in the 2006 Oscar-nominated picture "Pan's Labyrinth" -- in which he spoke Castillian.

Multilingual Lopez has also acted in English -- in "Pretty Dirty Things" (2002) and French, in "An Affair of Love" (1999).

"Pa Negre" has opened in France and has plans to hit cinemas in China and Japan, as well as be re-released in Madrid and Barcelona due to renewed interest following its candidacy for the Oscars.

Hope for a kinder world

A Christian Science perspective: How to stop hurtful criticism.

Have you ever felt pushed around? Or criticized? Or maybe you?ve been on the other side of things and have been too pushy or critical. There?s a problem here that relates in varying degrees to many people and to our society as a whole.

My experience suggests that criticism and unkindness are a kind of contagion that affects people in different ways at different times. Let?s say someone hears some critical remarks about someone else and relays them to everyone in the room, whether they want to hear them or not. If one of those listeners brings the remarks into another room, then a different group of people are also subjected to the comments, which doesn?t do anyone any good.

Whether you?re the giver or the receiver, criticism, at the least, deprives you of your peace.

Given Christ Jesus? record of healing and of improving lives, many consider him the expert on setting the right model. He used a metaphor about us as shining lights. This is a powerful lesson for everyone, so that the pusher or the pushed, the criticizer or the criticized, can find the peace and fulfillment he or she needs. He said, ?Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven? (Matt. 5:16).

Our heavenly Father or divine Creator has established each of us to be lights in our universe ? like the sun, which brightens the solar system. The sun is identified by the light and warmth it expresses. Ultimately, all of us are defined by the good identity and purpose God has given us. We are not subject to the identity and purpose that God has given others. We can?t really climb higher because of another?s fall. Nor can we fall lower because of another?s climb. In this way, there?s no true basis for subjugating another or for feeling imposed upon.

There?s actually a more fundamental point to consider: God is the divine Principle of our lives ? our source, origin, and cause. This divine cause is only good through and through. And there is no other fundamental cause or source. No one else is the source of, or is responsible for, our good ? nor is anyone in a position to take away our good. The heavenly Father is, in the fullest sense, the only force in the universe.

The Bible states, ?God is love? (I John 4:16). The divine order or law that governs the universe and those who dwell in it is loving and means for everyone to have harmony and fulfillment. And one by one, through our efforts to understand this fundamental order of our lives, we spread an awakening to the feeling of divine Love. Regardless of what end of the unkindness stick we?ve been on, this spiritual understanding of our relationship to God is scientific and conveys a power that heals the unkindness of our world.

Mary Baker Eddy, who founded the Monitor, promised: ?With one Father, even God, the whole family of man would be brethren; and with one Mind and that God, or good, the brotherhood of man would consist of Love and Truth, and have unity of Principle and spiritual power which constitute divine Science? (?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? pp. 469-470).

I?m sure we can all do a better job of coming to understand that we have one Father, one origin or force in our lives. And making this effort is indeed important. Through it, we bring the stability and joy that wipe out criticism and hurt feelings, revealing the good inherent in our wonderful, universal family.

Health and Fitness ? ATF: Illegal to Sell Guns to Med Marijuana ...

PHOTO:?Medical marijuana smoker

Firearms dealers in states that allow medical marijuana can?t sell guns or ammunition to registered users of the drug, a policy that marijuana and gun-rights groups say denies Second Amendment rights to individuals who are following state law.

Federal law already makes it illegal for someone to possess a gun if he or she is ?an unlawful user of, or addicted to? marijuana or other controlled substances. A Sept. 21 letter from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, issued in response to numerous inquiries from gun dealers, clarifies that medical marijuana patients are included in that definition.

?There are no exceptions in federal law for marijuana purportedly used for medicinal purposes, even if such use is sanctioned by state law,? said the letter by Arthur Herbert, the ATF?s assistant director for enforcement programs and services.

Federal firearm licensees, or FFLs, can?t sell a gun to someone who answers ?yes? when a required form asks whether the buyer is a controlled substance user. Last week?s letter also says that licensed dealers can?t sell a gun or ammunition if they have ?reasonable cause to believe? the buyer is using a controlled substance.

That includes if the buyer presents a medical marijuana card as identification, or if the buyer talks about drug use, having a medical marijuana card or a recent drug conviction, ATF spokesman Drew Wade said Wednesday.

But there are no new obligations for gun dealers outlined in the letter, Wade said.

?We received lots of queries from the industry from various states of how to deal with state legislation and the federal law,? he said. ?It?s our responsibility to provide advice and guidance.?

The clash between state and federal drug laws has led to lawsuits and criminal cases in some of the 16 states that have legalized medical marijuana use.

Officials in two Oregon counties have said they?ll appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court after state judges said sheriffs couldn?t deny concealed handgun licenses for medical marijuana patients.

The Oregon Court of Appeals and the Oregon Supreme Court said the state law that authorizes concealed handgun permits is separate from the federal law that outlaws gun possession by drug users, and the state gun law doesn?t address medical marijuana use.

Federal authorities also raided dozens of medical marijuana operations across Montana this spring, chilling a once-booming pot industry and leading to sweeping changes in Montana law.

The Department of Justice followed up with a warning letter to political leaders in many states that federal prosecutors will pursue marijuana distributors but not individual patients who are following state law.

The letter the ATF sent to gun dealers last week was first reported by Lee Newspapers of Montana.

Pro-marijuana and gun groups said the policy clarification amounts to rescinding the gun rights for the thousands of people licensed to use medical marijuana laws. And it appears to contradict a 2009 Department of Justice memo that said the Obama administration would not pursue prosecution of individual medical marijuana users who obey state laws.

Besides that, the government is putting an additional burden on gun dealers to police their customers, said Montana Shooting Sports Association Gary Marbut.

Special report: Matriarch puts Gandhi dynasty at crossroads (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? Rahul Gandhi, heir to the family dynasty that has dominated politics in the world's biggest democracy for generations, was trying to make himself heard in the uproar of India's parliament.

Looking nervous, he read haltingly from a prepared statement, criticizing as "anti-democratic" a popular anti-corruption campaign led by activist Anna Hazare, whose hunger strike was aimed at getting parliament to adopt a tough anti-graft bill.

With his voice drowning in the din of a chamber where members are prone to "storm out in fury" if they don't like what they're hearing, senior members of his Congress party beseeched him to "go on, go on" with an address that was being televised live.

Rahul later called his speech a "game changer" in the fight against corruption. Many thought he was deluded -- the government later caved in to some of Hazare's demands.

Weeks before, his mother and Congress party leader, an ailing Sonia Gandhi, had handed over power to a quartet of party leaders that included Rahul. But his long silence had irked Indians. Congress needed him to give the speech of his life.

As Rahul floundered, his younger sister Priyanka watched from the visitors' gallery. She was wearing a sari and her short black hair was swept back like her grandmother, assassinated Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, a style not lost on many Indians who thought she, not Rahul, should have been the one standing before parliament.

Nothing like the Gandhi family political franchise exists in the world today. A member of the family has essentially run India for two-thirds of the period since independence from Britain in 1947, melding the right to rule of an English monarch with the tragic glamour of the Kennedy clan.

Italian-born Sonia Gandhi, 64, has since returned to India, after five weeks for surgery in the United States for an undisclosed illness. The India media says she underwent treatment at New York's Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Her son's apparent ascendancy, and uncertain leadership qualities, have raised questions about whether a family political dynasty is compatible with a modern democracy and a country carrying increased economic and diplomatic clout.

Congress itself is a party in decline. Its post-World War Two vision of democratic socialism to uplift the rural masses, with big state-run companies and their public sector unions dominating the economy, is looking shopworn in a modern India where a dynamic private sector is propelling growth.

While Congress began reforms in the 1990s that have helped lead to an economic boom, its share of the vote has steadily fallen over the years as regional parties get stronger.

Sonia helped Congress win the last two general elections, but the party faces a more problematic challenge in the next one due in 2014, as a rising urban middle class, fed up with endemic corruption and poor governance, flexes its muscles.

Interviews with Congress party officials and family friends, some of whom have talked to the media for the first time, reveal deep concerns about the future of the Gandhi dynasty.

Doubts are being expressed in New Delhi's corridors of power, among businessmen in the financial capital Mumbai, by swathes of the poor who feel left out by a decade-long economic boom, and by a middle class angry at the unchecked corruption that annual growth of around 8 percent has brought.

This modern India no longer holds the Gandhi family in the same reverential awe; their tragedies that so traumatized the nation now fading with time.

"I think the whole idea of a dynasty negates merit," said Arun Jaitley, a senior leader of the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party. "The real worth of India's democracy will be realized only when the charisma of so-called dynasties is smashed. Aspirations are changing, people are becoming very harsh judges, things are changing for the better in India."

Rahul is putting his leadership credentials to the test by leading the Congress campaign for local elections next year in Uttar Pradesh, a poor and caste-ridden state with 200 million people, equivalent to the world's fifth-most populous country and considered a political barometer for India as a whole. Congress finished a poor fourth in the last state assembly elections there in 2007.

A RELUCTANT LEADER

A teenage Rahul Gandhi once told his father, the prime minister from 1984 to 1989, he wished they could go back to happier days when Rajiv Gandhi was a pilot with Indian Airlines and had no political aspirations.

"I can't now, because now I have a belief in my people. There is no going back," former Cabinet minister and family confidante Mani Shankar Aiyar recalled Rajiv Gandhi as telling his son.

"That," said Aiyar at one of those leafy British colonial homes in New Delhi reserved for India's senior politicians, "is the ethos of these kids growing up."

Rahul is the great-grandson of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister and independence hero. His grandmother and Nehru's only child, Indira Gandhi, was shot by her Sikh bodyguards. His worst fears were realized when his father was assassinated by a Tamil suicide-bomber in 1991 on the campaign trail.

Rahul, who did not respond to an interview request, may understandably be reluctant to take his spot in this pantheon, but his destiny and duty, his dharma, is written, as far as Congress is concerned.

"It's not a question of whether he will perform or has the ability. He will come on board," a senior Congress party insider said. "There may be rumblings (within Congress) but there are always rumblings. There were rumblings with Indira, with Sonia."

Rahul appears to be in search of an image in a country that expects its politicians to be larger than life -- movie stars are frequent election candidates, for instance -- to galvanize the poor majority who eke out lives of subsistence and misery.

"Sonia is not intellectually brilliant, but she has tenacity. She's stuck it out," said a source close to the Gandhi family. "Rahul may be genuine. But he is really just a very average guy."

Rahul, a bachelor, does seem nice. Even his detractors say he is genuine, committed to grassroots politics. When a newly arrived Reuters correspondent met him at a business conference, he seemed more concerned about the spouse and children of a visiting foreigner than talking shop.

In 2007, U.S. diplomats noted the skepticism about Rahul in diplomatic cables released by the Wikileaks website (wikileaks.org)

"Veteran politics watchers cannot explain Rahul's apparent missteps, while Congress insiders complain that he is a neophyte who does not have what it takes to become Prime Minister," an April 2007 cable said.

Family sources say he is underestimated, his reticence stemming from being a highly-educated man who has studied and worked abroad and is aware of the history on his shoulders.

"He's quite intelligent and bright, but he keeps his thoughts shrouded," said a close Delhi-based friend of Rahul. "Remember one thing. Rahul is an amazing chess player. Like any game of chess it's about who wins, why and the tactics."

Rahul has refused government jobs, preferring to rebuild the Congress youth wing, seen as crucial for the long-term survival of a party that relies on a rural vote bank, but which is run by members now at retirement age.

Congress officials say Rahul just needs time. When Rajiv was thrust into the leadership of the party and running the government after the death of his younger but more politically astute brother Sanjay in a plane crash, he also faced opposition from party veterans who stymied reform initiatives.

Congress will survive, they say, as it has before.

"It's like a willow tree," said Aiyar. "It may bend but it won't break."

But the party is no longer the dominant force it was for so many years. When Rajiv Gandhi first became prime minister in 1984, Congress had a two-thirds majority in parliament. Now it is a minority in parliament, dependent on querulous coalition partners, and most states are in the hands of regional parties or the opposition.

India's traditional caste and religion-based politics, while still a key factor in winning elections, is becoming less relevant to a growing urban middle class, who are also less in awe of a famous surname.

GRASSROOTS RUMBLING

Rahul Gandhi's home constituency of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh has long been the seat of power for the Nehru-Gandhi family.

As in much of India, modernity here is seeping into this small town of 12,000 in fits and starts and the family franchise is fading. Posters depicting the Gandhi trio of Sonia, Rahul and Priyanka are overwhelmed by images of Hindu gods and advertisements for mobile phone operators on the streets. A dusty statue of Rajiv Gandhi at the city center is about the only monument to the dynasty.

Disillusionment has set in among the youth here who are hard-pressed to find jobs in offices and factories and are disinclined to toil in the fields like their parents, the traditional vote bank of Congress.

"Our families for generations have been voting for Congress. They had faith in the party," said Mahi Khan, a 23-year-old arts student, dressed in sports shoes and a pink designer t-shirt. "But now it has become a family party and slowly its vote magic is fading away."

The disgruntlement can also be felt in nearby Rae Bareli constituency, another family bastion once represented by Indira and now by Sonia Gandhi. During Indira's rule, Indian Telephone Industries employed more than 12,000 people here. Today, most factories have closed or shifted elsewhere.

"There has been no development in the city. Gandhi family members are winning on their names," said Santosh Atlanti, 34, as his mother nudged him to keep quiet. "Even we had been voting for Sonia so far, but this time we need to think."

The Atlanti family owns three shops along the main road amounting to some 35-40 votes, he said. "That should count for something."

"The office of Sonia Gandhi is in front of my house but we cannot see her face to face, the way I am talking to you," he added. "Meeting her personally is beyond question as the security is so tight."

These rumblings of discontent may be one reason why Rahul is focusing on young voters, touring schools and universities. He tried that in state elections in neighboring Bihar state last year, however, with little success.

"Rahul's thinking is very good and the youth relate to that," said youth leader Rahul Bajpai in Sonia's constituency. "But many fossil-like seniors in the party do not want smart and clever youngsters to take prominent places in the party."

Even Rahul has been criticized for putting forward young candidates from rich families or with famous names for parliament.

"They come from well-known families. Apart from a few smart ones, many make parliament look like a college cafeteria," sniffed one senior opposition party member.

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF

When Sonia joined Congress in 1998 after a seven-year absence from politics following Rajiv's death, she faced a rebellion from Congress veterans worried about her Italian origins. She had met Rajiv as a language student at Cambridge.

Nevertheless, she was named party leader. Congress promptly lost the 1999 general election in one of its worst electoral performances to date to the Hindu-nationalists Bharatiya Janata Party. Since then, she has consolidated power, her popularity and mystique growing when she turned down the prime minister's job after Congress's 2004 election win and appointing reformist technocrat Manmohan Singh to the job instead.

For visiting dignitaries, her heavily-guarded mansion in the wealthy center of New Delhi is the place to be, not the Prime Minister's office in South Block on the site of the old British Viceroy's mansion. Forbes magazine this month named her the seventh most powerful woman in the world, ahead of IMF managing director Christine Lagarde.

At meetings, she may take down notes, but usually says little, her serious expression only occasionally breaking into a smile, party workers say.

"She is a loner," said Rasheed Kidwai, author of a biography on Sonia Gandhi. Her children are her closest advisers.

An art exhibition for renowned artist Anish Kapoor in New Delhi last year highlighted her almost regal isolation. A museum official told guests they would be able to see Sonia on a large TV screen while Kapoor escorted her around the exhibits. Delhi's elegantly dressed elite were only allowed in once Sonia had left.

No pictures of Sonia have been published since she returned from her operation and she has yet to make a public appearance, though she has met party leaders and coalition partners in private over the past few days. The Gandhi family and the Congress party have handled her illness as a "personal matter" requiring no public explanation.

As Congress leader, she has quietly squelched dissent and sidelined political rivals. With 79-year-old Manmohan Singh expected to leave office by 2014, Congress now has almost no candidates to replace him apart from Rahul.

When Rahul visited Uttar Pradesh to mediate over a high-profile land dispute earlier this year , Sonia ordered no other party figures to follow him. That happens often on his trips, Congress sources said.

"Sonia's failure to ensure meritocracy in the party may be fatal in modern India," said Inder Malhotra, a journalist and author on the Gandhis.

That may have worked fine in her first term from 2004 to 2009 as she consolidated power in the party. But with the government floundering in the face of corruption scandals, the economy slowing and reforms stuttering to a halt, Congress is searching for leadership.

One senior Congress official acknowledged Sonia has made some mistakes, including approving the appointments of officials now under investigation for corruption. Others say her aloof leadership style is holding back progress.

"Mrs. Gandhi never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity," said one U.S. diplomatic cable in November 2007 published by Wikileaks.

PRIYANKA A WILD CARD?

With Sonia seriously ill and her son struggling to measure up to the high expectations of a family scion, many Congress party eyes are turning in the direction of the 39-year-old Priyanka, who many think resembles her steely-willed grandmother Indira Gandhi, known as "India's iron lady".

"Priyanka has 50 percent of Indira's qualities. She has quick decision power, whereas Sonia and Rahul dilly-dally," said 87-year-old Uma Shankar Mishra, a senior party official in Rae Bareli.

Apart from counseling her mother and taking part in election campaigns, the mother of two has avoided politics. In public, Priyanka wears saris like her mother and grandmother, but in private she prefers wears jeans or skirts, the image of a modern mother.

"I think Priyanka is very knowledgeable about politics," said Aiyar, the family friend. "Remember, there was no person more non-political than her mother in the early days. But she learnt. Her imitation (of Indira) does not lie just in her hairstyle. It is more profound."

Her ascension remains unlikely as Rahul's younger sister. While Indira chose her younger son Sanjay over Rajiv, few think Sonia would ignore Italian and Indian tradition and bypass the older son.

The deeper worry is that neither Priyanka nor Rahul will be able to control a political system that demands strong national figures to keep fractious coalitions together. Congress also faces charismatic opposition leaders who have risen without a family name, such as the BJP's controversial chief minister in Gujarat state, Narendra Modi.

"I think Rahul can deal with the Congress party. The loyalty is there," said biographer Kidwai. "It's the second part that is tricky, dealing with crafty political allies."

The future of the family dynasty, along with the fortunes of Congress, may well rest with how Rahul plays the political end-game in this chess match.

"The Gandhi family is the bonding adhesive of Congress. The minute the family is not there, the party will begin to fall apart," said Aiyar.

As Rahul walked out from parliament that August day, reporters asked why he had taken so long to respond to the Hazare hunger strike and the anti-corruption protests it had inspired.

"I tell you why," Rahul replied. "Because I like to think about things and then decide about things."

He may be running out of time to do that.

Challah Bread - Food plays a major role in celebration of High ...

challah

WATERLOO REGION ? For the next couple of days, the smell of traditional challah bread will waft through the Kitchener home of Rabbi Nevo Zuckerman.

His wife Tamara, and some of their six children will be busy in the kitchen making the holiday sweet bread in preparation for the upcoming Jewish High Holidays.

It?s customary to eat challah bread on the Sabbath each week, but during the High Holidays ? which start with Rosh Hashanah on Wednesday night and end with Yom Kippur next month ? the challah bread is extra special, packed with a just a little more sugar to ensure the holidays are ushered in with sweetness.

?I love making challah. Remember the time I made one and it was 20 inches long,?? said 11-year-old Naftali Zuckerman, the eldest of the Zuckerman children.

The children are enthusiastic helpers in the annual bread-making for the many guests who will visit the Zuckerman home, near Beth Jacob Synagogue during the High Holiday period.

In Jewish tradition, food oozes symbolism, often referring to significant periods in Jewish history. Some times the food is bitter and sour, while other times it?s sweet.

Some foods such as fish symbolize fertility and prosperity while other foods such as bagels and eggs represent the circle of life.

The High Holidays are marked with sweet food. Some challah bakers choose to add raisins, chocolate chips or caramel chunks and roll dough in a combination of cinnamon and sugar.

Another distinguishing factor of the challah as compared to the one eaten on the Sabbath is its shape. For the holidays, the challah is round rather than in long braids referring to the cycle of life and symbolizing continuity.

?I will get up at 4 a.m. and I will smell challah in my house,?? said the rabbi.

The holiday also includes traditional honey cake served for dessert. Before the meal on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, it is common practice, whether in an orthodox Jewish home or a less observant family, to eat apple slices dipped in honey. Blessings are also said over the food and wine.

For Tamara Zuckerman, dipping apples in honey at Rosh Hashanah takes her back to her family home in Detroit where she was born and raised.

The upcoming holidays are the first in Kitchener for the American-born family who came to the region in July. The rabbi?s father, who is also a rabbi, won?t be visiting for the holidays but Tamara?s parents and grandparents are expected for the festival of Sukkot which follows the High Holidays.

?We started our own family,?? said Tamara, 31.

Many of the recipes Tamara will make over the holidays come from Jewish cookbooks used by her mother and grandmother. The meal for the eve of Rosh Hashanah is special and can take up to three hours to consume.

No Rosh Hashanah meal would be complete without the ubiquitous chicken soup served with matzo balls. It?s also a common dish during the weekly Sabbath meal for many Jews.

Soup will be followed by a whole baked salmon covered in sliced cucumbers served with a dill cream sauce, then honey chicken with quinoa, beef seared in pomegranate juice and vegetables and topped off with a freshly-baked apple cake.

During Rosh Hashanah, baked fish will be served with the head still attached. This refers to Jews being at the head rather than at the tail, being productive.

A cold fish appetizer commonly served during Sabbath meals and again at holiday time is gefilte fish. Meaning stuffed, gefilte fish is usually made of chopped fish formed into balls which are poached in fish stock.

The days before Rosh Hashanah will be busy in many Jewish homes with all food prepared by Wednesday afternoon. For the Zuckermans, an observant family, no cooking is allowed on the holiday so the two refrigerators, one in the kitchen and another in the basement, are packed with food ready to go.

Rosh Hashanah is also the Jewish New year in the Hebrew calendar. Historically, Rosh Hashanah represents the creation of the world and the creation of man.

The day is characterized by the blowing of the shofar, a trumpet made of a ram?s horn to symbolically alert listeners to the period of judgment. The shrill sound of the shofar recalls Abraham?s offering of his son Isaac as a sacrifice to God.

Services will be held at Beth Jacob, Temple Shalom in Waterloo and The Rohr Chabad Centre for Jewish Life on Albert Street in Waterloo.

During the High Holidays, Jews seek repentance. The period culminates in Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement and considered the holiest day of the year. For Yom Kippur, Jews fast until sundown.

Debbie Eisenberg of Kitchener will be holding a luncheon on Rosh Hashanah after services at the temple.

About 40 people are expected with family members from Toronto and local close friends attending the gathering.

It?s been a tradition at her home to have a large buffet meal at lunch so that people can leisurely enjoy each other?s company rather than hurrying off to eat dinner elsewhere.

The dairy-based menu includes hard-boiled eggs, egg and cheese souffl?, spinach pie, tuna and egg salad sandwiches, and lox, bagels and cream cheese.

And of course, challah bread and honey cake are integral parts of the meal. Eisenberg will be baking the bread and cake early next week.

?The food reflects the sentiment of the holiday,?? said Eisenberg, who was born and raised in a Jewish community in Brooklyn.

Her mother-in-law, Charlotte Levine customarily prepares the meal on the eve of Rosh Hashanah. This year about 16 people will attend the meal.

Food she?s making includes chicken soup with matzo balls which will include kreplachs which are similar to dumplings stuffed with meat. Following the soup, roast turkey stuffed with challah bread and cranberry sauce will be served along with sweet potatoes, carrots and prunes.

For Yom Kippur, a day of fasting, Eisenberg cooks a simple meal the night before. It usually consists of chicken or fish which is not highly seasoned, she said.

Plus, there?s a lot of water to prepare for the fast the next day. The fast is broken usually with a brunch-like meal of eggs and bagels and more challah bread and honey cake.

Rivky Goldman is used to preparing large amounts of food for Sabbath dinner. She and her husband, Rabbi Moshe Goldman, run the Chabad House in Waterloo where many university students come for weekly meals.

For Rosh Hashanah, some students might not be going home and Goldman expects she could have 100 people for dinner.

But she?s not fazed by the crowd. She, too, will be baking challah bread and honey cake in advance.

challah

?It?s part of me,?? said Goldman, who was born and raised in a Hasidic Jewish home in Brooklyn, and is true to her orthodox Jewish roots. ?It?s all bond together in one.??

Following the High Holidays, is the festival of Sukkot, four days after Yom Kippur. Tamara will be baking pumpkin pie and making butternut squash soup. The harvest festival is associated with the journey of the Jews from Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land.

The eve of Sukkot begins Oct. 12 and ends on the 19th. During Sukkot, families eat their meals for one week in a homemade hut that often sits in the backyard.

The hut known as the sukkah has walls but the roof is made of branches and leaves so that stars can be seen through the top of the booth. The roofless hut symbolizes the temporary huts that the Jews lived in during the Exodus from Egypt and how God protected them.

For the Zuckermans, Sukkot means family meals will be served in the sukkah unless it rains. For the children, there will be decorating of the sukkah with strings of popcorn and stalks of wheat and corn.

?This reminds us that our homes can be anywhere and made of anything,?? said Tamara. ?We want to show God that we are appreciative and thank him for providing food.??

Investing in Energy Efficiency Pays ? CNT Energy

Study Finds Range in Energy Efficiency Performance and ?Green Premium? Costs

An analysis of 51 LEED-certified green projects in Illinois found that most?specifically those that prioritized energy efficiency during the design and construction phase?use less energy than a typical commercial building. The study also showed that additional costs associated with green construction varied across projects, with a median value of $3.81 per square foot. In addition, building occupants are generally satisfied with their work environment and the commute to these LEED? projects.

?Not all green buildings are alike when it comes to energy efficiency,? said Anne Evens, director of the nonprofit CNT Energy, which conducted the study in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council ? Illinois Chapter (USGBC ? Illinois). ?Maximizing efficiency requires starting with the right priorities, monitoring usage, and tweaking operations and maintenance over the life of a building. Buildings account for a large portion of our global warming emissions here in Chicago, and building owners need to be diligent about efficiency to reduce emissions and save on utility bills.?

The study, ?Regional Green Building Case Study: Year Two Report,? is a follow-up to a 2009 study that examined the energy usage and other environmental factors in 25 LEED-certified buildings in Illinois. Of the 51 buildings in this report, 19 also participated in 2009. To receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, the U.S. Green Building Council rates green building projects on a point system for features that improve energy efficiency, indoor air quality, water use, and other areas. CNT Energy analyzed how projects performed over multiple years in areas including energy and water use, greenhouse gas emissions, operating costs, commute transportation and occupant comfort.

The participating green building projects include offices, museums, police stations and other building use types. The study?s sample represents nearly 25 percent of the state?s LEED-certified projects and includes projects from throughout the Chicago metropolitan area and central Illinois. The projects vary in size from 971 square feet to 4.2 million square feet. All provided at least 12 months of post-occupancy energy utility data. Most were able to provide energy use information for entire buildings, while 16 were able to provide only partial information about energy usage.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Agency, the average energy use intensity (EUI) for commercial buildings in the Midwest is 99 kilo-Btu per square feet per year (kBtu/ft2/year). Sixty-four percent of the LEED projects that provided energy use data for the entire building used less energy than this average for commercial buildings. Likewise, 77 percent of projects that provided partial energy use data performed better than a similar benchmark.

Twenty three participants provided information on a ?green premium,? which is the difference between a project?s actual construction costs and the expected costs had the project been completed without green features. Two projects reported no green premium, while the others reported premiums ranging from less than $1 per square foot to $107 per square foot. Most projects noted that grants or other financial incentives helped to offset the green premium.

Of the 19 study participants that provided information on operating costs, 11 indicated that their costs were lower than before moving into a green building, five noted no change in costs, two reported that they were not tracking such information, and one reported that costs had increased.

?Sustainability efforts should not stop after the design and construction phase,? said Doug Widener, executive director of USGBC ? Illinois. ?Achieving ideal performance for green buildings requires understanding how the building performs in the first place and continuously monitoring how it performs over time.?

Members of the media who are interested in learning more about this research are invited to attend a USGBC ? Illinois member education session on Thursday, September 29 at the Merchandise Mart. The fee will be waived for media.

John Lackey to Divorce Wife Krista, Breast Cancer and All; Pitcher ...

Apparently John Lackey's personal life sucks worse than his ERA.

The Boston Red Sox pitcher has filed to divorce his wife, Krista - who is in the middle of battling breast cancer - and became irate after receiving a text on the topic from an unknown source just before last night's start against the New York Yankees.

John Lackey Post-Game Interview

Lackey was highly emotional after Boston's dramatic 7-4 win in 14 innings last night, but he was fired up about more than Jacoby Ellsbury's heroics.

The terrible hurler lashed out at the media because of a text he said he received from a member of the media about 30 minutes before the contest.

Asked by Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald the seemingly innocuous question, "How do you think you pitched," he veered off topic. Big time.

"Let me tell you the truth," Lackey said.

"Thirty minutes before the game I got a text message on my cell phone from one of you, somebody in the media, talking about personal stuff."

"I shouldn't even have to be standing up here dealing with it. I'm sitting here, listening to music. I don't know who got my number, but that's over the line."

There were indications Sunday night that a celebrity gossip website had sent him the offending text message, but it could not be confirmed which one.

Even after the interview broke up, Lackey continued to rage. "I can't believe ? Any of you who would get into that is going to have a serious problem."

This morning, TMZ broke the story about his divorce from Krista Lackey, who just had a double mastectomy. Divorce papers were filed on August 30.

The two cited irreconcilable differences in personality for the split.

Here we go again, another round of Ashton Kutcher cheating rumors. This time a 23-year-old is claiming to have had sex with Ashton last week and now she has lawyered up. May be true peeps, as whispers of divorce are also circulating. The same rumor circulated the net last year about this time, except it was some chick named Brittney Jones. It is kind of suspicious because it is the second time that this rumor comes out and it is days after their anniversary. But this girl, who has chosen to remain anonymous, has hired a top notch attorney. RadarOnline reports, He was out until the early hours of that morning. “Ashton didn’t look like someone who was celebrating a wedding anniversary.? While Star magazine claims: “Ashton and Demi have separated and the marriage is over. The relationship ended because of Ashton’s serial cheating. It’s a painful time for Demi.” This marriage always seemed awkward to me. She is an ancient dinosaur who is way past her prime, and has been married three time and pushed out three kids. He is a young actor, in his prime, no past marriages and no kids. It doesn?t fit. MILFS are out. Now [...]

Metro communications team makes nearly $40K office upgrade ...

Metro?s communications staff has seen a lot of changes in recent months, and so has their office space.

The agency has spent nearly $40,000 revamping the office space for its public relations team, including adding new carpet, a new couch and new Apple computers, according to a spokeswoman.

General Manager Richard Sarles brought in a whole new team to brand his work at Metro, with new employees from the top on down. He even created a few new positions, including a social media guru, a market researcher and a managing director of public relations. The new managing director also needed an assistant. More hires are expected soon as the agency creates a bus alert system with three new people.

With those staffing changes meant changes to the office space. The agency had to squeeze two more offices into the existing space at the agency's headquarters, said Public Relations Managing Director Lynn Bowersox. That meant taking down moveable metal walls, then replacing 10-year-old carpet squares, she said. The agency did get some furniture from storage to fill the new offices, she said, but bought a new sofa and two new chairs for the office?s common area. Total cost? Bowersox said the estimate is just under $30,000.

And the department bought three Apple computers and monitors for approximately $9,875, she said.

?These expenses were covered within our existing budget for the department and provide the space and tools we need to improve communications with our customers, stakeholders and employees,? Bowersox wrote.

So that brings the total just under $40,000, not including new salaries and the $10,000 bonus given to Bowersox to join Metro.

Facebook?s iPad App Was Feature Complete In May, But They Won?t Release It, So The Developer Quit

log-in-screenYou may recall that two months ago, we found and leaked Facebook's iPad app. What was especially awesome is that the entire app was buried in the code for Facebook's iPhone app, you just had to do a few tricks to enable it. Once Facebook realized what we found, they took moves to try and shut it down. But it was too late. The app was out there, and looked pretty close to complete. In fact, it turns out it was?feature complete at that point. On his personal blog today, developer Jeff Verkoeyen reveals that Facebook's iPad app has been feature complete since May. How does he know? He built it. He was the lead engineer on the project. He had been working on it for 8 solid months ? sometimes as much as 80 hours a week, he says, to get it done in time. But Facebook's definition of "in time" kept shifting, Verkoeyen says. And that led him to quit the social network, and join rival Google.

Under fire, Europe works to bolster debt crisis fund (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? European policymakers began working on new ways to stop fallout from Greece's near-bankruptcy from inflicting more damage on the world economy after stinging criticism for failing to stem the debt crisis.

After a weekend of being told by the United States, China and other countries that they must get more aggressive in their crisis response, European officials focused on ways to beef up their existing 440 billion-euro rescue fund.

Deep differences remained over whether the European Central Bank should commit more of its massive resources to shoring up Europe's banks and help struggling euro zone member countries.

Shares and the euro fell in Asia on Monday as investors reacted cautiously to the weekend news. Financial markets have plunged in recent weeks on concerns about the ability of Europe to get a grip on the crisis.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, in unusually blunt comments, said the risks from Europe were enormous.

"The threat of cascading default, bank runs, and catastrophic risk must be taken off the table," he said in speech to the International Monetary Fund on Saturday.

Europe came under more pressure on Sunday when a top IMF official said the ECB was the only player big enough to "scare" financial markets, which have punished many euro zone members.

"The ECB is the only agent that can really scare the markets," Antonio Borges, the IMF's top official for Europe, told top economic policymakers from around the world.

However, Germany and many top officials within the ECB itself are wary about the central bank being drawn more deeply into supporting Greece and other debt-stricken states.

"It is not helpful that we have an avalanche of new proposals every week," ECB Governing Council member Ewald Nowotny said.

Markets fear that European banks could be dragged down by their exposure to Greece and other debt-strapped euro zone nations, and analysts say a bailout fund of around 2 trillion euros would be needed if the crisis spread to Italy and Spain.

A senior European official hinted that kind of firepower was being contemplated.

"We need to find a mechanism where we can turn one euro in the EFSF into five, but there is no decision on how we could do that yet," the official said.

Financial markets signaled some doubts that bolder steps would emerge soon given a lack of details from weekend comments and differences between euro zone leaders.

Ratings agency Standard & Poor's raised further doubts, suggesting that efforts to bolster the rescue fund would potentially trigger ratings downgrades in the euro zone region.

Asian shares trading outside Japan fell 2.3 percent to a 16-month low and the dollar index was up for the fourth session in a row.

"We believe this type of plan would be seen as a credible solution to the crisis," said Warren Hogan, chief economist at ANZ Bank in Sydney.

"However, this plan is still only in the 'rumor' stage, and it may face some tough hurdles in order to be passed by all EU authorities, indeed headlines are already suggesting some German dissent."

GREECE MEETS IMF IN BID FOR MORE CASH

Greece, the country at the epicenter of the crisis, is trying to secure its latest wad of cash from international lenders including the IMF next month to avoid a default.

Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos, speaking to bankers in Washington, said Greece was determined to stay the course of its tough austerity plan to meet terms of its bailout package.

He complained the outside world did not understand the severity of the measures that Greece is taking by cutting pensions, salaries and public spending but he insisted the country will "make it" through the crisis.

In Athens, Greek riot police fired tear gas at anti-austerity protesters pelting them with bottles outside parliament in the first such unrest after a summer lull.

"Greece is not the scapegoat of the euro area or the international economy," Venizelos said.

But IMF and European negotiators are frustrated at what they say is Greece's slow reform pace.

Venizelos met IMF chief Christine Lagarde on Sunday and afterward the IMF said a mission would head back to Greece possibly as soon as this week to assess progress.

The European Union and IMF have already bailed out Greece, Portugal and Ireland, and officials want to stop the crisis from spreading to Italy, Spain and possibly beyond.

ERECTING DEFENSES

The European Union's top economic official, Olli Rehn, said on Saturday that as soon as the region's governments confirm new powers for the bailout fund -- the European Financial Stability Facility -- attention would turn to how to get more impact from the existing money.

The new powers are expected to be ratified by mid-October. Germany's parliament votes this week on them.

Germany opposes contributing more money to help countries it sees as profligate and the focus has now turned to ways to leverage the existing bailout fund, possibly through the ECB.

Klaus Regling, who heads Europe's bailout program, said leveraging the fund's resources did not necessarily need to involve the ECB.

One top ECB official said Europe might follow the lead of the United States, which rewrote its financial rule book to cope with the 2007-2009 credit crisis.

ECB executive board member Lorenzo Bini Smaghi said there could be a European equivalent of the U.S. TARP program, which helped shore up the shaky banking system, or the TALF, which provided some liquidity to parched U.S. credit markets.

"I think both scenarios can be followed.... I think that these two options could solve the problem," he said.

A former U.S. policymaker summed up the frustration voiced by many investors and commentators.

"In Europe, they've kind of turned this into a bad Monty Python skit, where, you know, the guy comes out and says, 'We need to act,' and the next one says, 'You're right, let's draft -- no more talking..., 'I second the motion. Let's start doing something,'" said Austan Goolsbee, formerly chief White House economic advisor.

"I mean, they're not actually doing anything. They just keep agreeing that they're going to work in concert."

Earthquake, Flood, and Other Insurance Plans You Might Need ...

Insurance Plans

Quick! Do you happen to know what your insurance policy says? Chances are good that you?ve never really looked at what your insurance policy really says, preferring to just settle for what the insurance agent has told you. Sometimes you even make the mistake of just assuming everything is covered, when that?s actually not the case at all. You don?t really want to wait until the worst happens ? a major disaster ? to find out that you are not as covered as you think you are.

Right now, this is the season for tornadoes, floods, and even earthquakes ? makes for a busy summer. However, if you are one of the fortunate few that aren?t going outside to look at destruction, then you need to really stop and make sure that you are as well protected as you assume that you are.

As it stands, millions of policies that are supposed to cover our homes even in the worst of times really aren?t as all-protecting as you might imagine. There are numerous times where an insurance company will deny a claim because you don?t technically have the coverage for it.

For example, many homeowners automatically assume that their homeowner?s policy covers flood, earthquake, and even damage from tornadoes. However, most policies don?t quite cover natural disasters the way they should.

Instead of worrying endlessly about it, you should make sure that you look at your policy. If you don?t have a specific rider that states that your damages will be taken care of in the event of a flood or an earthquake, then you need to get this coverage right away.

In specific, what does an earthquake or flood insurance policy cover? Well, in a nutshell, your policy is going to cover the cost to replace or even just repair your property.

It does get more detailed. You will need to make sure that the policy covers the entire dwelling, plus the garage and even the storage shed. That?s where your property ?lives? too, and if you?re not careful these areas can get overlooked ? costing you a lot of money in the meantime.

In addition, you also have to think about the fact that there could be limitations on the total cost of damages. This means that if the damage is really severe, you might still be out money. This is where you really want to be on good terms with your insurance agent, as they should be able to get your limits raised ? provided that you really do have valuable stuff to cover. This is where taking pictures of what you actually own can come in handy.

Speaking of valuable items, you will want to make sure that you really get good pictures of these items and make sure that your policy will cover the true replacement cost, not just what it might have cost you to buy the item when it was purchased. This is something that homeowners skip over, and it can really cost them big money.

Overall, do you really need earthquake or flood insurance? If you are in an area that is prone to getting earthquakes, then you will definitely want to get that type of coverage. When it comes to flood insurance, you definitely want to consider it because any time you have excessive rainfall, you have the potential for massive flooding ? and massive damage if you happen to be in the path of the flood.

Insurance really doesn?t have to be hard ? it?s just a matter of planning ahead!

Richardson leads No. 3 Bama past No. 14 Ark 38-14 (AP)

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ? No. 3 Alabama turned the showdown with the Southeastern Conference's No. 1 offense into a showcase for the top defense. And the Crimson Tide's special teams.

Trent Richardson, too, of course.

Richardson rushed for 120 yards and caught a 61-yard touchdown pass and the Tide defense pretty much unplugged No. 14 Arkansas' normally high-powered passing game in a 38-14 win on Saturday.

The Tide (4-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) scored on special teams, defense and using the old-fashioned power run to emphatically win a game that the Razorbacks (3-1, 0-1) hoped would stamp them as legitimate contenders in the SEC.

Instead, the league's top defense thoroughly overpowered Tyler Wilson and the No. 1 offense.

"Well, we set out to establish that we were going against the best offense in the SEC and a lot of people were labeling us as the best defense in the SEC," Alabama linebacker Dont'a Hightower said. "So we wanted to go out and show people what we were capable of with all cylinders turning."

The result looked a lot like the Tide's 2009 national championship defense. Alabama had 10 tackles for loss, two interceptions, six pass breakups and four quarterback hurries. The downside: Linebacker C.J. Mosley sustained an elbow injury, and Saban said he is questionable for next weekend's game at No. 15 Florida.

Tide quarterback AJ McCarron also came up big in his first SEC start. He completed 15 of 20 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns.

Marquis Maze scored on an 83-yard punt return and DeQuan Menzie returned an interception 25 yards for another score. McCarron, also the holder, hooked up with tight end Michael Williams for a 37-yard touchdown on a fake field goal.

There was also a clear winner in the showdown between Bobby Petrino's passing game and Saban's defense.

The Razorbacks came in averaging 47 points and 517 yards a game against questionable competition, but didn't muster many threats this time.

They managed just 17 yards on 19 rushes and were outgained 397-226.

Wilson sat out most of the fourth quarter after completing 22 of 35 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns under near-constant pressure. Alabama defenders seemed to sniff out every screen and swing pass to his dangerous receivers for little or no gain.

Ronnie Wingo, who rushed for 109 yards against Troy, gained 14 yards on nine carries.

"They beat us in all three phases of the game," Petrino said. "In the first half, I thought our defense did a great job of keeping us in the game with the goal-line stand. That gave us a chance to come out in the second half and do something offensively but we just couldn't do it. They made big plays and we didn't."

Richardson had his third straight 100-yard game and also caught three passes for 85 yards, including the screen that went the distance. Backfield mate Eddie Lacy ran for 61 yards and punctuated the win with a 4-yard touchdown late in the third for the final points. It was the first rushing score allowed by Arkansas this season.

The Tide found plenty of flashier paths to the end zone, though. The result was a 17-7 halftime lead that was never threatened by the Razorbacks.

First, Alabama lined up for a 54-yard field goal on fourth-and-4 before McCarron shifted back and took the snap. He rolled left and lofted the ball to a wide-open Williams on the Tide's opening drive. It set the tone nicely for a game when just about everything seemed to go right for Alabama even though Arkansas tied it by the end of the first quarter.

Williams said the Tide had been practicing the play for about two years.

"We've been practicing it for a long time but I just finally said today the first time we got in field goal range, whether we were ahead 21 or behind 21, we were going to run it," Saban said.

The Arkansas defense salvaged some momentum in the second at the end of a 15-play drive, stuffing three straight runs from the goal line to force a field goal.

"We pinned our ears back and got after them," Arkansas linebacker Alonzo Highsmith said. "For a defense, that's the best thing in the world. At that point, we had the momentum and were feeling good about ourselves."

It proved a small and temporary victory.

Three plays later, Wilson's errant pass hit Menzie on his right forearm and bounced right back into the cornerback's arms for a 25-yard interception return to push the lead to double digits.

"We knew they were going to try to take a chance to get momentum back," Menzie said. "I just got in my zone and I saw the ball. They'd been on me all day because I dropped (an earlier chance) so I had to go make the play on the second one."

Maze squirted out of a couple of tackles on a punt return en route to an 83-yard punt return in the third.

McCarron then barely cleared a defensive lineman on a swing pass to Richardson, who sprinted to the end zone to make it 31-7.

Despite heavy pressure, Wilson responded quickly with a 39-yarder down the left sideline to Wingo and a 19-yarder to Cobi Hamilton in the back of the end zone. He was pounded an instant after making both throws.

"We've got to run the ball better and to throw it around better," Wilson said. "They brought a lot of pressure, and we've got to handle it better.

"They're a great football team."
