TORONTO (Reuters) ? Maple Group's plan to acquire TMX Group (X.TO) is on track, despite a retreating share price for the Toronto Stock Exchange operator.
The group of Canadian financial institutions said on Monday it is working with regulators, management and stake holders on issues surrounding the C$3.8 billion ($3.9 billion) takeover bid for TMX.
Shares of TMX Group have fallen 10 percent since Maple made its hostile bid in May, countering a friendly offer for the parent of the Toronto Stock Exchange by the London Stock Exchange (LSE.L).
Maple said the share price's fall does not signal any change in its plan, however.
In the same period, the main index of the Toronto Stock Exchange has fallen 6.6 percent due to an anemic U.S. economy and U.S. and European debt woes.
"Maple does continue to work with the regulators for its bid for the TMX, while at the same time having discussions with the TMX," said Peter Block, a spokesman for the group.
"And yes, there are discussions with TMX shareholders."
Maple, which includes four of Canada's largest banks, four top pension funds and one North America's largest life insurers, has said it is confident it can secure approval for the C$50 a share bid by late fall.
Maple plans to integrate TMX's exchanges with the Alpha Group alternative trading system and the CDS trade clearinghouse, raising antitrust concerns. The proposal requires approval by Canada's Competition Bureau as well as regulators in four provinces.
The LSE's offer derailed in June when it failed to generate sufficient shareholder support.
Shares of TMX closed down 1.04 percent at C$39.94 in Toronto on Monday.

The basic concern is that sabermetricians are devoting oodles of time to ever-more-complex?formulae which add only a small amount of predictive power, but which make the discipline more remote from lay understanding, and thus less practically useful. ? Basically: the jargonification of a field. ?Substituting ?law? into?Graham MacAree?s article on the failings of sabermetrics, we get the following dire warning:
?Proper [empirical legal analysis] is something that has to come from the top down ([law]-driven) rather than the bottom up (mathematics/data driven), and to lose sight of that causes a whole host of issues that are plaguing the field at present. Every single formula?must?be explainable without recourse to using ridiculous numbers. Every analystmust?be open to thinking about the [law] in new ways. Every number, every graph in a [ELS] piece?musttell a [legal] story*, because otherwise we?re no longer writing about the [legal system ] but indulging in blind number-crunching for its own sake. ?

[ELS] shouldn?t be so incomprehensible so as not to call up the smell of [a courtroom, or the careful drafting of the definition clauses in a contract, or the delicate tradeoffs involved in family court practice, or the importance of situation sense]. Statistics shouldn?t be sterile and clean and shiny and soulless. They shouldn?t just be about [Law]; they should?invoke?it. Otherwise, they run the risk of losing the language which makes them so special.?

Tropical storm Irene has knocked out power to more than 200,000 homes and businesses in Maine and has left residents of Carrabassett Valley isolated because of a bridge failure and high water.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua left no doubt about his abilities, knocking out Forrest Griffin in the first round of their rematch at UFC 134 on Saturday night. Rua was one of the many Brazilian-born fighters to win in front of the raucous crowd in Rio de Janeiro.
