On the court, Kortni Robinson finds it hard to erase the smile from her face, even when trying to be intimidating.
?I don?t even notice the smile,? Robinson explained.
She and her Decatur teammates have had plenty to smile about this season during a 20-3 start. The No. 3 ranked Lady Eagles finished playing in the Nocona Tournament Saturday before coming home Tuesday to play Nocona. Decatur will then play a huge match Friday as No. 2 Argyle comes to town.
?I?ve never enjoyed (volleyball) as much,? Robinson said. ?We have a good group, and we get along so well.?
For the past two seasons, Robinson?s ever-present smile hid the pain radiating in her knee that she pushed through, not wanting to come off the court.
?It seriously hurt,? Robinson said. ?There was this constant throb. It had been hurting my entire sophomore and junior years. But it was getting to a point where I couldn?t take it.?
After the Lady Eagles? historic playoff run came to an end in the Class 3A Region I quarterfinal with a loss to Abilene Wylie, Robinson sought help to pinpoint the source of the pain.
?The first week of offseason I went to the doctor,? she recalled. ?I went in for a steroid shot. Then they looked at it and took a MRI. They were going to do a scope. That?s when they noticed the bone in the knee cap was chipped off.?
Robinson said doctors told them they were unsure of the cause of the problem, which could be from when she was born.
She underwent surgery on the bone, which included tearing through muscle that had to be surgically tied back together.
?It sounds worse than it was,? she said.
But the procedure kept her out much of the offseason. Decatur coach Claire Rose wondered how the three-year starter would recover for her senior year.
?She wasn?t able to do anything in the offseason, but she did a lot of rehab to get back,? Rose said.
After the surgery, Rose noticed Robinson had even more spring in her step, adding to her already tremendous leaping ability.
?Before she was going up some on one foot which took some off her vertical,? Rose said. ?Now, she?s pain-free and more comfortable.
?She?s always jumped well and been able to hit over the blocks. She beats a lot of people because she?s able to hang a little.?
This season, Robinson is averaging 3.9 kills per match with 91 on the year.
Along with her offense, she?s taken on playing the back row for the first time and has flourished. She is third on the team in digs, averaging 6.1 per outing.
The play on the back row has her diving and testing the surgically repaired knee constantly.
?At the beginning of the season, I was scared to fall on the knee,? Robinson said. ?Now, I?m not worried.?
Along with playing volleyball, Robinson is a cheerleader. She said it makes for busy Friday nights, balancing the two.
?It?s hard,? she said. ?Once district starts, we?ll be going to the same place. That?ll help. But I always keep my mind in the right place during the volleyball game.?
Her cheering ability is a vital asset to the Lady Eagles as she?s made it her responsibility to keep the team smiling.
?We have leaders like Kortney [Tompkins] and Joey [Redwine] that keep people motivated and make sure they are doing the right things,? Robinson said. ?I try to be the one that stays positive and keeps everyone happy.?
As long as the Lady Eagles keep winning, Robinson and her teammates will continue to have plenty to smile about.
