Reducing employee fatigue improves worker safety | SafeAtWorkAZ ...

Sleep deprivation can cause loss of productivity, illness and safety risks. According to USA Today, health experts have?stated?employee fatigue is becoming an epidemic that can jeopardize health?work quality and?worker safety. Sleep aids muscle repair, memory consolidation?and hormone regulation linked to growth and appetite. Sleep also boosts the immune system and makes people more alert, which prevents accidents. Employees who don?t get enough dozing time can therefore have a very negative impact on business.

Sleep refreshes the body and mind
According to an?ABC News?report, some employers have decided to boost worker productivity by allowing naps at work. Several organizations have even started turning closets or unused rooms into places where workers can relax or ?power nap.?New Jersey investment firm, Paramus, lets employees sign up for 20-minute sessions of restorative time twice a week, the newspaper report found. Employees say they emerge refreshed and more able to focus on work.?

This is not surprising considering?adequate amounts of sleep have a positive?effect on one?s mood, memory and performance of mental and physical tasks, health practitioners?told The Lamar Ledger, a local newspaper in Colorado.

Employers can help prevent workplace fatigue
Not all?work environments are ready to install rooms for napping, but employers can still take steps to reduce workplace fatigue. Employees require regular rest?or meal breaks throughout the day, according to government labor resources. A new employee?may need to focus?harder on work than experienced employees, so employers may want to make sure they are getting the training and?support they need.?

Dehydration also can cause fatigue. Some businesses find it helpful to have a water cooler in the workplace or on work sites so everyone has access to fresh water.

Finally, keeping employees? work shifts in mind when creating schedules can help prevent sleep deprivation. Studies show?employees who work at?night?can suffer from disturbed sleep patterns?and need more recovery time between shifts. Spacing out schedules so that employees do not have to work?a morning shift immediately after a night shift?is important to prevent the negative effects that spring from lack of sleep.
