re coffee service in library - LISTSERV 15.5 - MEDLIB-L Archives

I have allowed covered drinks in the library for the past 15 or so years. We have not had any issues with spillage. All our clients are very careful. I have had some forgotten water bottles- but that is not a problem. A few weeks ago we had someone secretly spill their soft drink all over a computer desk and keyboard - I didn't find out about it until someone asked why the "H" button was sticking and that's when I discovered the sticky mess all over the place...other than this "disaster" and replacing that keyboard, I haven't had any problems, at least not enough to stop the food and drink. The day may come, though... Our university library here in town has a coffee shop in it, but I don't know what their policy is for food and drink in the actual stacks...I know the coffee shop is located in the "foyer" area... The decision to start allowing food and/or drink should also be accompanied by a decision to increase the cleaning service and related budget. Everything is a trade-off, there are no free lunches etc.... So I personally would not like coffee, etc,. permitted in the library. I can't even imagine what would be the replacement costs of books, keyboards, chair cleaning, etc. if it were permitted. With the continuing shift to online format and the consequently reduced space required to house a collection, I wonder if anyone has incorporated a coffee shop into the library? While it sounds like fun (I'd love to learn to make a caramel macchiato!) there are obvious impediments, noise being a big one, renovation costs another, staffing a third. > > Has anyone tried this or considered and rejected it?
