5 Simple Nature Crafts to Do On Vacation
The car is bulging at the seams, and if you put one more thing into the bin on the top, it will likely burst. If you?re heading to the cabin and looking for something to do on a rainy day, don?t worry about bringing the craft supplies! These simple nature crafts will brighten your child?s day, and they don?t need many supplies at all.
Draw With Sand
Sand castles are all the rage with the under-ten beach crowd, but have you made a sand painting? Find a blank canvas, such as a piece of paper, a piece of wood, or a flattish piece of lawn, and you too can make a sand picture. Create abstract patterns of dry and wet sand, or make faces out of sand as well! If you?d like your art to be permanent, put a layer of glue down on your piece of paper, then scatter dry sand on top.
Create 3-D Nature Art
When you have the cabin to yourself and you?re free to decorate as you wish, why not decorate outdoors as well? Create your own art installation with a nature sculpture! You can get very creative with these sculptures. Hang ropes from trees and weave plants and other natural materials through the ropes. Make a nature mobile with sticks, stones, or shells. Place rocks on end and balance them to make an Inukshuk, a sculpture to mark a place in the landscape.
Turn Over a New Leaf
There?s some amazing art going on with leaves these days. From art installations that feature the different patterns of fall leaves to intricate portraits created in leaves, there?s no end to the ways that leaves can inspire the imagination! If you see a fallen leaf on the ground, use it as a painting tablet. Explore the textures and beauty of the leaf by adding new colors with your own art. If you?re feeling ambitious, take a greener leaf from the ground and cut it as you would a Valentine, creating a leaf cutout!
Leaf Prints
Summer?s a time to get messy, and what better thing to do outside than spray painting? Place a leaf on a piece of paper. Using a spray bottle filled with a mixture of tempera paint and water, spray the piece of paper. Let it dry, then remove the leaf. You?ll have a lovely leaf print!
Story Stones
Stones tell the story of the place where they are, and you can tell a story with stones too. Paint a picture on a stone and leave it near your campsite. You can also get many flat stones and paint them individually, using them to tell stories to others around the campfire.
When you?re making nature art, be sure that you return what you?ve taken once you?re done with it. Always check to ensure that what you?re taking isn?t an animal?s home or an important food source for the animal. Whenever possible, use dry or dead plant material and return it to the forest or beachfront after you?re done!
Nature is beautiful, and you can add your own creative touches to its beauty with nature art. Have fun being a nature artist this summer!
