Think back to a time when you were a younger boss and a mature worker approached you for a job. How did you feel? Did you feel insecure with the idea of telling someone who could have been your parent what to do? Were you a bit intimidated? Today?s younger bosses have similar thoughts going through their heads when they are faced with the task of interviewing a worker who is considerably older than they are.
Here are some ways you can put a younger boss at ease so they are comfortable hiring you.
Be direct about your intentions. Some younger bosses shy away from hiring more experienced workers for fear that these individuals will want their jobs. Or worse, they worry people will find out they really aren?t the most qualified person for the management job.
In your cover letter or early on in your conversation, be specific about your intentions. If you are looking for a job where you can make a contribution without the added stress of management, then say so. Doing so will put the other person at ease and will allow him or her to consider you based on the value you can bring to their work group.
Toot your horn gently. I?m always telling employees and job seekers that they need to toot their horn loudly to be heard in a sea of cubicles. However, there are times when it pays to blow gently. You don?t have to tell a perspective boss about everything you did in your last high-powered job. Focus solely on those areas that you believe would be of most value to his or her organization.
Demonstrate why it?s in a younger boss?s best interest to hire you. Wouldn?t it be great if the boss could go on vacation for a few days and not worry about the business? How about if they had qualified people on staff to do what they are now paying external consultants to do? Respond to interviewing questions in a way that demonstrates how much better off your boss will personally be with you by their side.
