About 357,000 young adult Texans have gained health coverage since September 2010 because of the federal health care law, the Obama administration announced Tuesday.
That?s the equivalent of the entire population of a city somewhat larger than Corpus Christi (pop. 305,442 in 2010), though a bit smaller than Arlington (pop. 367,185).
The law requires insurers to let young adults stay on their parents? family policies until they turn 26, even if they move away from home or graduate from school.
The new report by the National Center for Health Statistics shows a 10-point jump in the?percentage?of adults, 19 to 25, with insurance between?September 2010 and December 2011. That translates into 3.1 million more young adults with coverage, it said.
Although overall public support for the?law has dipped in recent months, the?provision helping?young adults has been highly popular, according to polls.
?This policy doesn?t just give young adults and their families peace of mind, it also gives them freedom,? said U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. ?It means that as they begin their careers, they will be free to make choices based on what they want to do, not on where they can get health insurance.?
