Microsoft files complaint with EU against Google, Motorola

It accused Motorola of attempting to block sales of Windows PCs, Microsoft?s Xbox game console and other products

Microsoft has asked EU antitrust regulators to intervene in a patent dispute with Google and Motorola Mobility, saying that Motorola is aggressively enforcing patent rights against rivals to stymie competition.

Microsoft said that Motorola Mobility was charging it excessively for use of its patents in Microsoft products, a week after getting a nod from the European Commission and the US Justice Department to Google to acquire Motorola.

Microsoft's deputy general counsel Dave Heiner in a blog post said Microsoft has taken this step because Motorola is attempting to block sales of Windows PCs, Microsoft's Xbox game console and other products.

Heiner added that Motorola has refused to make its patents available at anything remotely close to a reasonable price.

As per EU competition rules, holders of patents necessary for industry standards need to let other companies use them for a fair price.

A spokesman for competition affairs at the EU Commission Antoine Colombani said the regulator has received the complaint and will examine it, according to the Reuters.

Neither Motorola nor Google commented on the allegations.
