If you live in coastal regions of the country, particularly the southeastern states, including Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina, you know those areas are prone to heavy precipitation, and they receive a lot of humidity. But what you may or may not know is that, that excess moisture can foster breeding grounds for ants inside your home.
There are many different types of ants in the world, some of which are specifically attracted to moisture such as the moisture ant and carpenter ants (especially which rotting, soggy wood is involved). These ants are attracted to mildew and soggy parts of wood, or anything that allows wood to break.
Any time there's a storm coming through, or excessive periods of rain, such as the spring and summer, and you can almost guarantee your home will be subject to some form of ant invasion. If you have cracks in the wood or brick exterior of your home, ants will view this as a formal invitation to come in and explore new territory.
If you have an area of your home that's subject to a lot of water, such as an area where the sprinkler hits, you can expect a buildup of sulfur or mineral deposits. These deposits will eventually erode away at the paint and eventually the concrete, further allowing ants and other bugs a place to congregate and a path of entry into your home. This can also happen very commonly on front porches.
You can also expect the possibility of mice and other rodents during rainy season because these pests have to take cover. Their favorite hiding spot -- your attic. They will also hide in children's play houses outside, tree houses, garages, and outdoor animal cages and sheds. You'll want to check these areas regularly to make sure your kids and your pets are safe from these critters, although, you'll more than likely hear a loud, blood-curdling shriek from your child if there are rats in his or her tree house! These neighborhood pests, including ants and rodents, will congregate when there is food left hanging around, and if there are crevices for them to burrow in, such as areas underneath your home or holes in your roof. That isn't exclusive to indoor pests. If you notice, leaving food outdoors, such as feeding the neighborhood cat or feeding birds, will also attract mice, fruit rats, ants, possums, raccoons, and other nuisances, which will come rain or shine.
